Job Description

Penticton is a vibrant, innovative, healthy waterfront city focused on sustainability, community, and economic opportunity. The City of Penticton Fleet Services Department supports all departments within the municipality. We service, maintain, and repair vehicles from the RDOS, RCMP, Penticton Fire Department, all City Vehicles/equipment as well as our own Electrical Utility Department.Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, the Garage Lead will provide skilled work as a Journeyman Heavy Duty Mechanic and/or Journeyman Automotive Mechanic related to the repair, service and maintenance of equipment and machinery. In addition, the Garage Lead will be responsible for assisting the Fleet Supervisor in the day-to-day operational delegation of duties and supervision of the shop workforce, as well as managing projects and ensuring activities progress as planned. The position is expected to operate as a working lead hand role.Key Responsibilities:

  • Performs relief duties in the absence of the Fleet Supervisor, as required.
  • Assists with scheduling and coordinating the daily repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment in the fleet including Fire Apparatus and Electrical Aerial Equipment.
  • Investigates fleet-related complaints and calls, and takes corrective action as assigned by Fleet Supervisor.
  • Assists with supervision and checks the work of employees engaged in the repair and maintenance of fleet vehicles and equipment as necessary.
  • Contributes feedback to Fleet Supervisor for evaluation of employee performance.
  • Diagnoses, repairs, replaces and adjusts major and minor mechanical equipment problems on diesel and gasoline engines, light and heavy-duty transmissions, hydraulic systems, brakes, steering, light and heavy-duty differential, pumps and a variety of other specialized equipment as required.
  • Proficient in utilization of GPS software.
  • Conducting frequent inventory audits.
  • Completes welding repairs to City facilities and equipment (e.g., fixing cutting edges on buckets, fabricating guard rails, welding pipe, etc.).
  • Performs minor body and paint repairs to equipment and vehicles as required.
  • Ensures Fleet is repaired and maintained in adherence to all federal and provincial regulations as required.
  • Supports the City #39;s Safe Driving Program.
  • Performs repairs to small tools used in construction (i.e., chainsaws, tampers, pumps, etc.).
  • Maintains equipment and tools used in the performance of work in a clean safe manner and keeps the work area clean and tidy.
Education, Trainingamp; Experience:
  • Completion of secondary school or equivalent.
  • Journeyman Heavy Duty and/or Automotive Mechanic - Inter-Provincial Red Seal certification.
  • 5+ years of experience as a Journeyman Heavy Duty and/or Automotive Mechanic in the repair and maintenance of vehicles, construction equipment, heavy-duty trucks and machinery.
  • Supervisory experience considered an asset.
  • E.V.T. certification and experience considered an asset.
  • B.C. Driver #39;s Licence - Minimum of Class 3 w/ air endorsement.
  • Courses or certification in mechanical operations, health and safety, risk management and supervisory training are preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Excellent leadership qualities including interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated professionalism during interactions with City of Penticton employees and the public.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to effectively plan, direct, and lead others.
  • Able to utilize current computer technology.
  • Able to work co-operatively or independently, problem-solve and exercise independence of judgement.
  • Able to write effective day-to-day correspondence including work orders, repair descriptions, and internal memos or correspondence.
  • Proficient in navigating and utilizing Fleet management software for maintenance scheduling, reporting, inventory tracking and service record management.
  • Able to read, understand, and interpret plans and specifications.
  • Able to use all tools required in the mechanical trade including, but not limited to, grinders, welding equipment, hand tools, power wrenches, air tools, diagnostic equipment, and related automotive and heavy-duty shop equipment.
  • Thorough understanding of Fire Apparatus and Aerial Equipment testing, troubleshooting, regulations, and maintenance.
  • Able to maintain physical condition sufficient to perform assigned duties including the ability to lift or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Able to operate City equipment and vehicles safely, and possess a valid driver #39;s license with an acceptable driver abstract.
  • Demonstrated superior mechanical aptitude.
