  • Act as Hybrid Family and Criminal Staff Lawyer
  • Provide criminal law duty counsel services and representation in the Ontario Court of Justice as required
  • Provide family law duty counsel services, including mentoring Legal Aid Workers and preparation of court documents for eligible clients as well as representation in the Unified Family Court and the Ontario Court of Justice at First Appearances, case conferences and settlement conferences, motions, negotiations, and other services as required
  • Assist unrepresented clients with CYFSA matters
  • Provide advice lawyer services at the Family Law Information Center (FLIC) as required
  • Provide advice lawyer services on the Summary Legal Advice (SLA) telephone service for both family and criminal law
  • Ensure high quality of legal work in a cost effective manner
  • Maintain client files and conflict lists
  • Record data and produce reports as required
Required skills & experience
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Knowledge and experience of relevant family law legislation and in particular child protection law
  • Knowledge and experience of all relevant criminal law legislation
  • Experience working as a Criminal Duty Counsel and ability to perform tasks independently and with minimal supervision or support from management.
  • Client focused
  • Ability to work independently in a fast paced environment
  • Intermediate knowledge of Word, Excel, PowerPoint. Experience with Divorcemate and Legal Files would be an asset.
  • Sound judgment and problem solving skills
  • Personal motivation and accountability
  • Teamwork and collaborative skills
  • Demonstrated ability to use latest communication technologies, including Smartphones, Slype, Zoom, iPad and iPhones
  • Must have intermediate knowledge of the following Microsoft programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Ability to research and retrieve information
Preferred Skills & Experiences:
  • Sound Knowledge of Legal Aid Ontario’s operations and mandate
  • Prior family, CYFSA and criminal law court experience
  • Demonstrated interest in aboriginal legal issues
  • Training or advocacy experience in relation to mental health issues
  • Ability to communicate in French is an asset
  • Must have own transportation
