Watercraft inspections are part of a larger province-wide AIS Program that includes monitoring, response planning, education campaigns, and policy. The Watercraft Inspections Program is focused primarily along major highways in Alberta and it is mandatory for all vehicles towing watercraft to stop at the inspection stations.RoleReporting to the Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Operations Site Supervisors, the AIS Site Leads are responsible for the safe operations and supervision of several Alberta watercraft inspection stations. The stations are located at major highways entering the province and boaters, according to the Fishery (Alberta) Act, are required by law to stop when transporting watercraft. The watercraft inspection program is critical to the province of Alberta as a major line of defense against an introduction of aquatic invasive species that could cost the province $75 million in annual maintenance costs. Site leads are responsible for maintaining operational readiness of staff and equipment at their stations.The Site Leads will ensure the watercraft inspectors at their stations are following safe work procedures, maintaining occupational health and safety (OH&S) binders, leading site OH&S tailgate meetings and assisting supervisors with site-specific hazard assessments.As Fishery Guardians, these positions hold special authority under the Fisheries (Alberta) Act for decision making requiring quarantines of watercraft belonging to members of the public. This position is also responsible for approving shift changes, day off requests and reconciling time reporting of the staff at their stations.QualificationsA completed high-school diploma plus a minimum of one year related experience is required. Experience working at the Dunmore or Vermilion Government of Alberta watercraft inspection stations is a requirement. Proof of a valid Class 5 driver’s license, proof of certification/enrolment in Standard First Aid and CPR C and a 3-year commercial driver’s abstract are also required.Candidates must have experience working in a hands-on mechanical environment. This position requires working with high pressure hot water decontamination units, trouble -shooting their problems, and providing mechanical advice for repair and maintenance, therefore, candidates must have using decontamination units.Detailed knowledge and experience working with and around boats, and an understanding of their complex mechanical systems is also a requirement.Knowledge and experience with Government of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Program would be considered an asset.Equivalencies will be considered.APS CompetenciesCompetencies are behaviours that are essential to reach our goals in serving Albertans.
