This role provides support and leadership in developing program based strategies, standards, consistency and knowledge transfer initiatives designed to enhance the ability of rangeland resource users, administrators and stakeholders to integrate rangeland resource management with other resource management activities occurring on the landscape.This position assists the Provincial Range Specialist to deliver the Rangeland Conservation and Stewardship Section work plan in the southern ecosystems of the Province (i.e. including but not limiting to the Foothills Parkland, Montane, Subalpine, Lower Foothills, and Upper Foothills natural sub-regions). This work involves collecting, analyzing and reporting rangeland ecological information and developing resource management strategies to promote conservation, resource stewardship, and integrated use of public rangeland. This position identifies and communicates known and emerging rangeland resource issues, presents, implements, and monitors the success of potential solutions, establishes technical protocols, conducts detailed resource inventories, maintains research infrastructure, and develops range management tools. The specialist also works within a team to support and train rangeland Agrologists` and stakeholders to promote Crown land stewardship and facilitate disposition management.Other requirements include:

  • Ability to adapt to a continually evolving environment centered on a team-focused, fast-paced workplace environment.
  • Proven ability to lead teams through change and implement new ways of working.
  • Experience working within or alongside teams, other public sector organizations and external stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to negotiate, influence, and liaise effectively with colleagues, members of the public and external agencies.
  • Expert knowledge of the relevant legislation, processes and policies.
  • Advanced analytical and problem solving skills, with an ability to interpret emerging issues.
In this position you will spend time working in both an office setting, as well as extensive field work. You will be required to travel provincially for field activities. You will have regular and on-going contact with various stakeholders, both internal and external to the Department.QualificationsUniversity graduation in Range Management, Agriculture, Environmental Sciences, or a related degree, with appropriate specialization, plus three years related experience; or equivalent as described below. Eligible for a Professional Agrologist membership with the Alberta Institute of Agrologists along with the requirements for the Range and Pasture Management practice area.Equivalency: Related Master’s degree considered in lieu of part of the three years of related experience on a one-for-one basis Assets
  • Previous leadership, supervisory, and project management experience.
  • Experience using Government of Alberta and ministry specific programs and applications.
  • Additional post graduate training (Masters) to develop research, analytical, and writing skills would be an asset.
  • Experience with range ecology, landscape processes, and using ArcGIS and/or other GIS mapping software.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with 4+ years of progressively related experience along with related education.
