The candidate will be familiar with AASHTO, ASTM and ATT testing standards and will be required to apply engineering practice to design HMA that will provide an economical and durable solution for the City of Calgary and Alberta Infrastructure projects throughout the construction season. The ability to apply math as related to the design of HMA will be a strong asset. A previous history the application of Marshall and Superpave design systems will also be an asset.The candidate will be required to provide their previously acquired leadership skills to a staff directing them as needed to test HMA during the production phase. The selected individual will be in charge of maintaining a CCIL quality control system to track production data and to determine the correct course of action for plant changes to ensure HMA performance is compliant with specifications. The individual will be familiar with the PG grading system used to select binders based on traffic loading requirements. The correct candidate for this position will determine the final quality of Asphalt products, ensuring the highest customer satisfaction. The individual will lead in the development of asphalt binder grades, and provide HMA designs that will meet specification requirements for the acquired projects. New product development will engage and challenge the individuals technical and leadership skills.Responsibilities:Safety:

  • Ensure compliance with safety practices and procedures, proactively act in eliminating/controlling risk, and act as a safety champion
  • Maintain familiarity with MSDS specs, the different aspects of the emergency response and remain up-to-date on all lab emergency procedures.
  • Ensure communication of safety requirements as it relates to other site employees.
Operational:
  • Control mix parameters through the active testing of raw materials, work in progress and finished goods
  • Develop asphalt products to service our customers’ needs (design aggregate skeleton of the various mix types, i.e. Marshall, Superpave, SMA, OGFC, etc.)
  • Responsible for the testing, evaluating and preparing the above noted mix design types
  • Responsible for the testing and evaluating the asphalt cement rheology properties
  • Assist with a focus on the optimization of mix designs and ensuring production costs are kept to a minimum
  • Work collaboratively with the Operations Manager as well as production staff in various technical functions in the operations
  • Solid team member within the business unit, flexible with regards to hours of work
  • Maintain quality as per specification requirements
  • Accurate and on-time reports
  • Maintain and develop strong working relationship with customers and/or representatives
  • Assist with the development of new product research and development initiatives.
  • Trains new QA/QC Technicians in field and laboratory Quality Control testing procedures and practices, (ASTM, AASHTO, CSA, CCIL, and Lafarge Best Practices) as required.
  • Carries out ongoing laboratory testing of asphalt cements as per the SHRP protocol M320 specifications
  • Responsible for the testing and evaluation of asphalt cement rheology properties, i.e. penetration and viscosity.
  • Carries out regular updates to the Quality Assurance Manual, test databases and spreadsheet and provides report summaries or analyses as needed.
  • Be a responsible advocate for on-the job safety and the environment.
  • Participate in technician and/or inter-laboratory materials testing and equipment correlation and certification programs as required to maintain accurate and consistent methods and test procedures or corporately mandated certification programs.

Qualifications:Education:
  • Completion of a program in Engineering sciences. EIT
  • Completion of or Civil Technical Program C.E.T or otherwise
Experience and Skill Set:
  • Technically sound in all facets of asphalt hot mix quality control and quality assurance testing
  • Strong working knowledge of Excel spreadsheets, Microsoft Word and Power Point
  • Familiar with Occupational Health & Safety requirements and safe work procedures
  • Believe in continuous improvement and will act accordingly.
  • Have excellent communication skills.
  • Be a team player, positive and with a can-do attitude.
  • Be able to perform with minimal supervision.
  • Enjoy analyzing situations and making decisions accordingly.
  • Have a friendly and constructive customer service attitude.
