Position DescriptionThe University of Calgary, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (UCVM) is seeking a dynamic, experienced veterinarian with a passion for teaching bovine medicine and surgery, for a full-time or part-time position in Production Animal Medicine for an Assistant Professor (tenure track), Associate professor (with tenure) or Professor (with tenure). This position is also posted in the instructor stream for those interested in a 80-90% focus on teaching and clinical activities.A dynamic multidisciplinary team is responsible for delivering the bovine component of the curriculum at the UCVM. This team is currently seeking a new colleague with a passion for clinical teaching, research and supporting the professional development of our students.Appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor will be made with the expectation of teaching in the DVM program and supervision of graduate students as a core component of the position (50 - 60% depending on rank) and will include didactic lectures, clinical and professional skills laboratory courses and 4th year clinical rotations. Clinical skills teaching will occupy a large portion of the DVM teaching component and will focus on undergraduate bovine skills. Our DVM program employs a Distributed Veterinary Teaching Model; therefore, clinical duties and 4th year rotation teaching will occur in partnership with production animal specialty practices or other Faculty led practice settings such as the University of Calgary WA Ranches.Anticipated 30% of time will be dedicated to research. Current clinical research strengths of the bovine team include infectious disease, pain and animal welfare, lameness, reproductive function, and molecular diagnostics. Service commitments will be allocated at 10-20% depending on rank (e.g., serving on committees internal or external to UCVM).Successful candidates must hold a DVM (or equivalent) and/or PhD degree and be licensed or eligible for immediate licensure in the Province of Alberta. There are some opportunities for special or limited licensure within the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association. A minimum of 5 years of clinical practice experience is preferred, but all applicants with demonstrated expertise in bovine clinical skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, previous experience mentoring or working with students, and passion for clinical bovine teaching will be considered.Advanced clinical or population health training is considered an asset.Appointments at the Assistant Professor rank must be able to demonstrate a strong publication record and evidence of successful undergraduate teaching. Applicants at the Associate Professor rank must provide evidence of a strong publication record and research program, and evidence of successful teaching and graduate supervision. Appointment at the rank of Full Professor requires evidence of a well-established academic achievements recognized by peers at the national level, a significant track record of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals and evidence of an established and externally funded research program. The successful candidate will have evidence of an outstanding teaching and trainee (post doc, graduate and undergraduate) supervision and mentoring record.The UCVM is a dynamic community with approximately 70 faculty members, 130 staff, 140 DVM students, 150 graduate students, 35 post-doctoral fellows, and 15 advanced clinical trainees. UCVMs DVM program provides a comprehensive general veterinary education with currently 50 students per year. The program is an integrated core-elective program that combines discipline-based courses with extensive on-campus and off-campus experiential learning.
