Job Description

Position OverviewThe Department of Physiology & Pharmacology in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for an Assitant Trainter. This Fixed Term Recurring Part-time position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.This position reports to the Principal Investigator.The Assistant Trainer primary purpose is to assist the Study Coordinator and support the research team through providing assistance and support for the exercise intervention.The Brain in Motion II Study is a randomized control trial with both an aerobic exercise intervention and stretch and tone intervention that is looking at the effects of exercise training and cognitive outcomes.This is a recurring part-time position working approximately 12 hours per week. Actual days/hours of work will vary depending on study schedule. Recurring Part-time employees are hourly employees engaged to perform work on an irregular schedule.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Oversee a designated exercise group (aerobic exercise or stretch and tone)
  • Setting up all monitoring equipment (POLARî) before each exercise session
  • Encouraging and teaching participants their required exercise programs at their required work rate intensity (as prescribed by research staff)
  • Providing positive feedback to participants regarding their effort and commitment to exercise program
  • Teaching participants exercise techniques as recommended by the research study
  • Addressing any technical difficulties that may arise with the heart rate monitoring equipment
  • Communicating effectively and efficiently with the Study Coordinator regarding any participant issues or concerns
  • Removing all monitoring equipment (POLARî) after each exercise session
  • Work in conjunction with the other exercise trainers, any volunteers or practicum students who attend the exercise sessions
  • Reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipment
  • Keep exercise area clean and safe
  • Manages own time effectively and regularly checks in with Study Coordinator regarding participants progress and data quality
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • Understanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specialization
  • Daily data export and quality check, weekly back-up, and regular data entry
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Required to be CPR-A & AED certified
  • Keen interest in exercise and the aging population and in the field of Kinesiology
  • Demonstrated strong communication, team skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelines
  • A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success
