There are times when a particular student, with more pronounced behaviors, requires individual supports and interventions. Students may have co-occurring diagnosis such as moderate cognitive disabilities, ADHD, ODD, OCD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Additionally, support in all areas of communication; speech/language delays, fine motor development (speech devices), sensory processing is required.Students may demonstrate challenging behaviours:

• Aggression toward others (hitting, biting)
• Destructive behaviour (throwing, breaking)
• Disruptive behaviour (crying, screaming)
• Unsafe behaviour (running, limited awareness of surroundings and personal safety)

The position may require the candidate to support students in:

• Supervision and support with toileting routines
• Supervision and support when eating
• Supervision and support with dressing (putting on coat, boots, etc.
• The ability to lift up to 50lbs

The BSW will be required to support mobility needs of students in wheel chairs, walkers, and Mobility Aides. This will include bending, lifting, managing a walker, toileting and physical support in and out of the school building. Toileting involves lift/transfer and cathetering/diapering of two female students; one is approximately 125 lbs.The successful candidate will work collaboratively with teachers and support staff to help support students with self-regulation and anxiety needs, and is an integral to SSP’s, IPP’s and Student Personal Safety Plans.Position DescriptionResponsibilities

• As part of a multidisciplinary team participate in the design, assessment and support of the Individual Program Plan (IPP) and Behaviour Support Plan (BSP) by documenting behavioural issues and concerns; recording qualitative and quantitative data related to the student’s behaviour; communicating information to parents/guardians in order to assist students with the achievement of IPP goals.
• Design and provide a broad spectrum of activities and experiences by delivering individual and small group instruction such as anger management and social skills development in order to address the goals of the IPP.
• Perform responsibilities in a professional manner by acting in ways that are consistent with recognizing and respecting each other, working to earn and sustain trust, communicating with each other in ways that promote mutual understanding, using collaborative approaches to problem solving and decision making and giving colleagues the benefit of the doubt in order to create and maintain positive working relationships which lead to quality learning experiences for students.
• Contribute proactively to the safety and security of the learning environment by implementing appropriate interventions; providing personal care as required, administering First Aid; ensuring adherence to safety standards; storing and distributing medications as per CBE policy; may be required to monitor the medical needs of the student in order to promote the safety of the child and others.
• Ensure compliance with school guidelines and fulfill employment contract by performing a variety of operational functions in adherence with Occupational Health, FOIP, CBE policy, practice and procedures in order to fulfill the responsibilities and the expectations of the role.
• Support professional growth by maintaining current certification, including specialized education in order to contribute to the development of supporting roles and maintain standards.
• Liaison with other professionals, initiate and organize multidisciplinary meetings as required by working with internal and external professionals e.g., from community schools, CBE specialists, multidisciplinary team members, medical professionals, Calgary Health Region, Calgary and Area Child and Family Services, Youth Justice, AADAC, Youth Shelters and other resources for the child and parent in order to provide or make available appropriate resources/support for students in order to meet the goals of the IPP and BSP.
• Contribute proactively to the safety and security of the learning environment by identifying and accessing resources, designing and implementing interventions in order to provide or make available resources/support for students in order achieve the outcomes of the IPP and BSP.
• Support the professional growth of others by working with practicum students, e.g., Youth and Child Care, Justice, Social Work in order to share expertise and experience with developing professionals in support of student needs.
• Support others, e.g., Lunch Program Supervisors, Education Assistants, Teachers, parents by providing programming recommendations for behaviour support as well as in-service opportunities for others in order to build capacity of others in support of student learning.
• Provide support to families by meeting with families as needed; communicating with the parent/guardian; connecting the family with community resources, working with parenting groups; provide support to parents/caregivers regarding home based behavioural plans in order to promote student success and family wellness, giving parents an opportunity to be a part of the IPP and BSP.

QualificationsEducation and Experience

• Two year Diploma in a related field such as Child and Youth Care, Justice, Social Work.
• Minimum of two years of experience in a related field.
• Current Certification in Standard First Aid.
• Current Therapeutic Crisis Intervention or equivalent.
• Certification as required for site-specific programs, e.g. Wilderness First Aid, WHIMIS, Valid Alberta Class 4 Driver’s license.
• Certification in Child and Youth Care from Child and Youth Care Association of Alberta (achieved while working) is preferred.
• Outdoor education experience and achievements is an asset.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Demonstrated Skills and Competencies

• Knowledge of related support agencies and professionals within the community.
• Demonstrated ability to build relationships with emotionally disturbed adolescents (12 – 18 year old students).
• Reasonably strong athletic ability and fitness level.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain enthusiasm and commitment with students.
• Ability to sustain physical exertion on the job.
• Personal suitability.
