About MRUFounded in 1910 and located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, Mount Royal University grew into a vibrant college in the 1930s and became a mid-sized university in 2009. Mount Royal has carved out a distinct niche by offering smaller class sizes, a robust liberal education and unique undergraduate programs. Currently, more than 15,000 credit students choose from 13 bachelor degrees and 38 majors.Mount Royal University is located in the traditional territories of the Niitsitapi (Blackfoot) and the people of the Treaty 7 region in southern Alberta, which includes the Siksika, the Piikani, the Kainai, the Tsuutina and the Iyarhe Nakoda. We are situated on land where the Bow River meets the Elbow River. The traditional Blackfoot name of this place is "Mohkinstsis," which we now call the city of Calgary. We ensure compliance with the University’s obligation under provincial legislation and further compliance with all legislation.Safety, Risk and Employee Wellness oversees Environmental Health and Safety, Security, Risk Management and Employee Wellness as well as Emergency Management, and Institutional Insurance and Claims. The department is developing contemporary safety protocols, growing Mount Royal’s ability to assess and react to trends relating to safety and wellness, building robust risk assessment and creating an institution-wide Enterprise risk platform.The Business Continuity and Emergency Management Advisor is a new position and will be responsible for the business continuity planning emergency management across MRU.About the RoleThe position will report directly to the Chief Safety, Risk and Employment Wellness Officer. The Business Continuity and Emergency Management Advisor will collaborate with all levels of leadership and the executive team to develop and implement plans to anticipate, address, and mitigate the effects of various business interruptions and Black Swan events. In addition, they will coordinate training and staffing of the Emergency Operations Center.The position must be able to quickly learn and become versant with multiple business functions and various technologies to succeed in their role. These business areas are many and vary widely in their functions and responsibilities at the University. Responsibilities: Responsibility 1 -BUSINESS CONTINUITY PLAN DEVELOPMENT AND IMPLEMENTATION (50%) :The Business Continuity Advisor in the first 12-18 months will be tasked with the creation and modeling of the Business Continuity Plan (BCP) for MRU. After development of the plan the advisor will complete wide range of responsibilities, which can include:

  • Reviewing the organization’s disaster recovery plan to ensure that it meets industry standards and is regularly updated. Researches and designs BCP models.
  • Developing plans for maintaining operations during a disaster, including creating a backup facility or alternate site to house operations during a crisis
  • Creation of policy to reflect MRU for development and implementation of BCP plans
  • Maintaining contact with insurance agents and brokers to review coverage needs and ensure that the organization has adequate coverage in place for all risks
  • Conducting regular drills to test emergency response plans and identify areas where improvements can be made
  • Monitoring trends in technology, business practices, and regulatory requirements to ensure that the plan meets current standards
  • Coordinating emergency response efforts with local or federal government agencies as needed
  • Monitoring risk management activities to ensure compliance with industry standards
  • Coordinating communication with external stakeholders during a crisis, including customers, employees, business partners, and media outlets
  • Developing and maintaining an effective disaster recovery plan that meets industry standards and can be executed quickly in the event of an emergency.
  • Develops processing for the seamless transition to on-line work.
Responsibility 2 -LEADERSHIP (25%):
  • The Advisor will lead and manage the development of the BCP model.
  • Key responsibilities in directing this group will include:
    • To provide respectful, thoughtful and technically strong leadership to MRU, including guidance for the management teams in the Business Impact Assessment (BIA).
    • Development of departmental key performance indicators and ensuring resources are available to meet the key performance indicators and any associated benchmarks.
    • Establishment of departmental goals and objectives that are consistent with the Universitys strategic direction.
    • Development of policies and management of the approval process for all policies related to Employment Wellness.
    • Excellent working relationships, within the Advisor’s scope of influence, is essential to meet the objectives with all MRU.
Responsibility 3 -LIAISON (5%):
  • The Advisor is the primary contact for the Senior Executive, Departments and Faculty heads regarding the BCP.
  • The Advisor must develop excellent working relationships with the diverse internal community to problem solve issues, with respect to campus BIA and BCP.
  • The Advisor is required to be the Universitys key representative with stakeholders to help build and maintain business continuity and emergency management initiatives.
  • The Advisor is the key liaison and representative for the University in liaising with external stakeholders in BCP implementation and impact on the broader community.
Responsibility 3 -EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT COORDINATION (20%):
  • In collaboration with relevant stakeholders ensure emergency protocols and manuals are current
  • Assist in coordination of annual Emergency Operations Center planning and development of protocols, manuals and training materials
  • Participate in Fire Safety Plan- ensure annual maintenance and review
  • Coordinate implementation of institutional and general emergency protocols
  • Support the development of emergency response plans for off-campus activities, as a key area of risk mitigation to off campus activities
Responsibility 4-Experience:
  • 3-6 years in a similar role
  • Development of Business Continuity document planning that includes process maps, business rules, recovery plans and procedures
  • Meeting/Group facilitation
  • Client/Customer service
  • Experience in Conducting risk assessments and a business impact assessment (BIA) for all departments and functions, analyzing potential business impact of unpredictable business interruptions such as natural disasters, security breach, legal claims, and market disruptions. Experience with integrated systems
  • Experience in identifying and implementing recovery operations and methods to allow the University to function at limited or partial capacity in the event that part or all of the infrastructure is damaged or destroyed.
  • Experience in developing and providing employee training on business continuity, risk management and disaster recovery.
  • Demonstrated coordination skills with multiple client groups.
  • Communication experience both written and verbal
  • Project management experience
