Job Description

BACKGROUND: Aspen Service Dogs (“ASD”) is an Alberta Government Qualified Service Dog Organization. We pride ourselves on supplying highly trained, well-behaved canines that can perform a variety of tasks for their human partner. We provide Mobility, Autism, PTSD and Facility Service Dogs to people with disabilities.Job Title: Certified Dog TrainerLocation: Calgary, AlbertaType: Part Time Position (daytime & evening hours)Deadline: Open until filledSalary: To be determined upon skill set and number of hours workedOverview of Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assesses, trains, supervises and monitors assigned dogs and works cooperatively and collaboratively with instructors in training their dogs.
  • Trains dogs by employing various techniques including familiarizing them with human interaction, polishing basic obedience skills and teaching advanced skills.
  • Identifies, anticipates, and attempts to rectify any potential or existing behavioral problems in dogs as they arise.
Primary Responsibilities: The Certified Dog Trainer will assist with the training of the dogs in class setting. The Dog Trainer will execute all commands and will provide the service dog working skills through social outings and with commands that will be incorporated into life experiences. The dogs will be in age groups varying from 12 weeks – 24 months.QualificationsExperience:
  • Minimum of two years experience at an ADI, IGDF, Government Recognized School or other pet dog trainer facilities.
  • Experience analyzing, assessing individual dogs and carrying out a tailored training program.
  • Knowledge of and experience using operant conditioning techniques and cooperative care.
Management/Technical:
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and reasoning skills.
  • Ability to work with clients and their dogs in a group setting.
  • Excellent organization and time-management skills with the ability to effectively prioritize workload, multi-task, respond adeptly to shifting priorities and act quickly to immediate needs.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work in a busy and at times, noisy work environment.
  • Valid Driver’s License will be required with clean driving abstract.
  • Must pass a criminal background check.
  • Proficient in the use of PCs; MS Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to learn various software programs.
Physical Demands:
  • Physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds, the agility to move quickly, climb stairs, operate office equipment, and the ability to get up and down easily while working and playing with dogs.
