Job Description

The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is looking for Prairie Dog Field Technicians to support our Prairie Dog Project as part of our Reintroduction portfolio. Prairie Dog Field Technicians will assist with the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo’s Prairie Dog Project that is using research to contribute to the recovery of prairie dogs and black-footed ferrets in Canada.Contract Term**May 30, 2022 to July 24, 2022What You Will DoAll members of the field crew will comply with the organizations health and safety program and contribute equally to field and office work activities including:

  • Mark-recapture of black-tailed prairie dogs and Richardson’s ground squirrels
  • Biopsy sampling of prairie dogs
  • Prairie Dog visual observations (counts)
  • Motion camera maintenance and image tagging
  • Vegetation identification and sampling
  • Data entry
In addition, each technician will be responsible for coordinating/facilitating the following roles:
  • Vegetation identification/sampling
  • GPS data management
  • Budget
  • Biological samples
  • Wildlife cameras (Reconyx)
  • Data management (Microsoft Access)
  • Health and safety
What You Will Bring
  • Possess or working towards a BSc or equivalent education
  • Minimum 2 years experience with biological field work (eg. GPS, wildlife and vegetation surveys)
  • Class 5 driver’s license
  • Standard First Aid Certificate required, Wilderness First Aid is preferred
  • Demonstrate a passion for wildlife conservation
  • Demonstrate a love of working and/or recreating outdoors
  • An eye for detail, as accurate and precise data collection and entry is essential
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience living with co-workers in tight quarters
  • A high level of physical fitness
  • A commitment to adhere to safety protocols and contribute to safe operating practices
Additional Requirements
  • All candidates must be eligible to work in Canada
Working ConditionsField Work:
  • Field work is located in Grasslands National Park, Saskatchewan
  • Expected to work early and long hours independently and in a team
  • Requires animal handling (live-trapping prairie dogs and Richardson’s ground squirrels)
  • Requires plant identification
  • Carry heavy equipment over long distances and up steep hills
  • Requires data entry
  • Hiking/working in remote locations under various weather conditions including extreme heat without shade
Housing:
  • Housing is provided in Val Marie, Saskatchewan
  • Live in close quarters with field team in a house in a very small town
  • Live with up to 8 people throughout the field season in shared rooms
  • Days off are highly variable and weather-dependent and will be spent in Val Marie, Saskatchewan
