Job Description

Position OverviewThe Office of the Vice Provost (Indigenous Engagement) is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Coordinator, Indigenous Cultural Protocols for approximately 36 months.The Coordinator, Indigenous Cultural Protocols reports to the Director (Indigenous Strategy) with oversight by the Executive Assistant in the Office of Indigenous Engagement. This position is part of the Office of the Indigenous Engagement and will work under the day-to-day supervision of the Executive Assistant and works closely with the Vice Provost (Indigenous). The incumbent will work closely and collaboratively with Engagement and other team members and is focused on cultural protocol observances for special cultural events and the respectful inclusion of traditional knowledge keepers in teaching, learning, and cultural event planning. This position has peak periods that may require flexibility in office hours to accommodate special events.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Maintaining in depth understanding of principles, recommendations, and overall content and intent of Indigenous Strategy.
  • Ensuring the respectful inclusion of traditional knowledge keepers and coordination of cultural protocols and gifting for special events and ceremonial activities.
  • Providing cultural advice and guidance to the campus community on cultural protocols.
  • Developing learning resources and facilitate workshops for the campus community on cultural protocols and observances (e.g. special cultural observances, protocols and processes for cultural gifting, and teachings related to regional traditional land acknowledgements, honour songs, and the university tipis).
  • Support the delivery of an Indigenous knowledge lecture series, including an Elders Teaching series and Indigenous scholarly lectures series in consultation with the Vice Provost (Indigenous Engagement).
  • Liaising with Indigenous Elders/Traditional Knowledge Keepers for the purpose of inclusion in special events, ceremony, teachings, and presentations.
  • Ensuring university policies procedures and practices are respectful of cultural protocols and promote respectful inclusion of traditional knowledge keepers.
  • Coordinate and facilitate cultural protocol and gifting for traditional knowledge keepers in relation to events hosted by the Indigenous Engagement team in accordance with cultural protocol guidelines and in compliance with University procedures and practices.
  • Manage requests and inquiries for Traditional Knowledge Keepers and/or cultural experts to participate in campus events, courses, or dialogues - includes faculty and staff looking to engage Traditional Knowledge Keepers in teaching, learning, research.
  • Participate in the Office of Indigenous Engagement Sub-committee structure for the implementation of the Indigenous strategy.
  • Provide input and advice on policies and procedures to enhance, find parallels, and create systemic space to ensure cultural protocols and practices.
  • Collaborate, assist, and/or advise on the cultural protocol in the planning and indigenization of broader institutional events.
  • Design cultural protocol guidelines, learning resources, and interactive training opportunities for respectful engagement of traditional knowledge keepers, teepee stewardship, and cultural events.
  • Work closely with the Indigenous Strategys Program Coordinator for Special Events and Communications on special event planning and communications pertaining to cultural observances and protocol. Cultural assistance provided for events include but are not limited to: Orange Shirt Day, Campfire Chats, Annual Journey Update, Treaty 7 Day, and the Annual Tea Dance.
  • Represent the Office of Indigenous Engagement on relevant internal and external committees when appointed.
  • Work closely and provide assistance to the Vice Provost (Indigenous Engagement) and Traditional Knowledge Keepers in the planning of ceremonies and the care of cultural gifts associated with the strategy including but not limited to: ceremonial transfers, ii taapohtop teepee, honor song, tea dances, and ii taapohtop Buffalo robe winter count, and other special cultural observances.
  • Develop and coordinate a volunteer program for the Office of Indigenous Engagement utilizing volunteer software programs, such as Better Impact for special events and student engagement.
  • In consultation with traditional knowledge keepers and the Vice Provost (Indigenous Engagement), oversee the stewardship of the ii taapohtop Teepee:
    • coordinate volunteer training for putting up and taking down the teepee
    • manage requests for the teepee for special events
    • liaise with risk management and facilities staff to ensure compliance and coordination of teepee use
  • Prepares and ensures cultural protocol items (cloth, tobacco, blankets) are available for upcoming events.
  • Maintains record of materials distributed.
  • Identifies when supplies are low.
  • Supports the purchase of supplies.
  • Coordinates volunteer on matters pertain to preparing cultural protocols and supports for cultural events in consultation with the Director (Indigenous Strategy).
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the VP (Indigenous Engagement).
  • Maintain records of meetings and presentations.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Familiarity and knowledge of regional Indigenous cultural protocols and ceremonial observances is essential.
  • Completed Bachelor Degree in related field.
  • Appropriate First Nations, Metis, or Inuit community related work experience, with experience in the Treaty 7 region being preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years related work experience, preferably in direct association with Indigenous education, programs, and/or communities.
  • Possess positive, well-established relationships with Indigenous communities, leaders, and cultural knowledge keepers.
  • Proven experience in the coordination of Indigenous cultural events and supporting Indigenous ceremonies.
  • Excellent interpersonal communications skills, contributing to a positive team environment.
  • Reliability is key - this position requires excellent proven time management and relationship building skills through the ability to be present and available.
  • Demonstrated excellence in facilitation skills (public speaking).
  • Ability to act decisively and to exercise a high degree of diplomacy, confidentiality, initiative and judgment.
  • Good judgment, relationship building, interpersonal communication, and diplomacy in working with team members, internal members of the campus community, and external partner organization.
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to perform multiple and complex tasks, with attention to detail and business processes.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills along with a strong customer service orientation.
