Job Description

As such, we welcome talented individuals that have a variety of perspectives, backgrounds, and industry experience who will contribute to the success of our One Parkland team.Position Title: Crude TraderTeam and Location: Supply & Trading - Calgary, ABPosition Summary:Reporting to the Director of the Dark Oils Commodity Team, the Crude Trader will be accountable for the oversight of Parkland’s Crude by Rail portfolio, including the management of risk profile of that portion of the portfolio. This position will also help with vacation coverage for the Dark Oils (asphalt, fuel oil, feedstocks) by rail portfolio and vacation coverage for crude supply to the refinery on TMPL. The role will support capability development on TMPL/TMX trading with focus on heavy Canadian grades for shipments off the West Coast. The Crude Trader will play a key role within Parkland, leading and developing new business growth initiatives, while contributing to the profitability of the Supply & Trading division and Parkland as a whole. The role will be a senior position on the team, therefore, would be responsible for helping with overall portfolio oversight and team member development. Responsible for both physical and derivative trading for portfolio of responsibility.Key Responsibilities:Identifying, developing current crude oil trading opportunities

  • Purchases and sells Crude oil directly to/from end users and intermediaries under negotiated rates and terms.
  • Responsible for transaction structuring and negotiation, risk management and trading of crude and other dark oil commodities, and distribution and/or interconnection and transmission of crude through other organizations distribution systems.
  • Leveraging the TMPL expansion project to identify opportunities to create additional value.
  • Provide insight for contract agreements to ensure deal structures are documented per transactions and risks associated with contract are mitigated to an optimal level.
Applying Financial Risk Strategies
  • Optimize risk positions using futures, options and derivative products
  • Execute standard hedging program in accordance with company policies
  • Lead development, management, and execution of adjustments to standard hedging program
  • Analyze market information and market trends daily to inform decisions on standard hedging programs
  • Delivers incremental value to the organization through trading optimization within defined limits
  • Ensures that all embedded risks are fully assessed, valuation of products is appropriate, and transactions are priced to compensate for risks incurred
  • May design customized hedges using derivative securities (i.e., swaps, futures, options)
Relationship Management
  • Maintaining and managing current flow of business and ensuring that it continues to be sustainable and profitable (In-land and some marine).
  • Developing new relationships and building new business opportunities.
  • Helping develop overall Dark oil team capability
Safety and Operational Excellence Stewardship
  • Lead/oversee health, safety, and environmental excellence compliance and adherence to POEMS within this role’s sphere of influence
Other
  • Working closely with Logistics and Operations teams to ensure timely product delivery and identify opportunities. Involves commercial conversations related to demurrage, timing, product quality/volumes etc.
  • Laisse with all internal functional groups to ensure continuous improvement in deal process execution.
  • Sitting on Industry Focus Groups to participate with external stakeholders for creating a collective industry voice on important regulatory, pipeline tariff or other topics.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvement.
Qualifications and Skills:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, Mathematics or similar.
  • Requires 7+ years of relevant experience in the energy trading industry (with cross exposure and understanding of Logistics, Operational Risk).
  • Proven track record of ability to manage complex physical commodity book and associated risk profile, capturing arbitrage (rail, pipe, marine), contract negotiations, pricing and financial instruments to do so in most efficient manner.
  • Strengths in understanding proprietary trading systems to act as a user expert with multiple Allegro platforms.
  • Expertise in multiple modes of transportation is as asset (pipeline, marine, rail)
  • Risk background.
  • Direct experience in managing complex supply chains on Canadian crude grades (heavies, C5, lights).
  • Prior experience in a Leadership role, would be an asset.
  • Strong understanding of trading systems, finance, processes, and internal controls.
  • Strong analytical capability: able to analyze data from multiple sources and compile information in an easy to understand format.
  • Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to negotiate successful outcomes.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with customers, both internally and externally.
  • Ability to understand, synthesise and extract insights from large amounts of data and market information.
  • Strong excel modeling skills and power point are an asset.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills along with the ability to work well in cross-functional teams.
  • Self-motivated and proactive approach and work ethic.
  • Positive attitude, intellectual curiosity and a willingness to work in a team.
  • Must be detail oriented with the ability to multi-task with attention to accuracy.
  • Must be team player that possess the ability to adapt to a changing and fast paced work environment.
