Join us!Job SummaryCN Rail is a leading North American freight railway, headquartered in Montreal, Canada. The “Innovation Engine” is CN’s in-house innovation function, responsible for developing and deploying innovations throughout CN’s business. Joining the Engine is an opportunity to drive the next frontier in rail and logistics innovation.As our Expert-Innovation Engineering, we’re looking for an Innovation Evangelist who enjoys the challenge of finding high-value concepts, shaping the concept, and help delivery build solutions to enable CN to accelerate its transformation to be ever more efficient and successful in its operations in the ever-changing busines context. In this role you will have the opportunity to design and manage innovative solutions resulting in the launch of projects to market to accomplish CNs goals.Working directly with Senior CN and business unit leaders, Innovation Engine peers, project sponsors, and other peers, this role will be key in aligning the business’ priorities with Engine capacity and delivery.Main ResponsibilitiesDesign Innovative Solutions

  • Stay current on emerging technologies and potential disruptors (market trends, macro-economics, industry evolution and technology) in the relevant domain.
  • Propose new innovative ideas that could bring value to CN
  • Work with the business unit to extract and document ideas
  • Actively participate in triaging of ideas in order to select the most feasible, high-potential concepts that will bring the greatest value to CN. For the selected ideas, be accountable for defining the concept and creating concept pitch page.
  • Be accountable, in the concept validation phase, for the concept brief. This includes understanding the business context, rapid concept design (including the high level roadmap and scope for alpha, beta and MRP deliverables), concept strategy, feasibility evaluations of alternative technologies and solutions (incl POC if required), direction recommendations, delivery approach, partnership models and high-level funding estimates.
  • Develop Innovative solutions to overcome barriers to technology/solution adoption. Ensure excellence.
  • Apply design thinking and SAFE AGILE methodology.
  • Monitor success rate and determine critical success criteria of implemented concepts.
Manage Relationships
  • Build productive customer relationships with business stakeholders, including sponsors, business subject matter experts and executives.
  • Build productive partnerships with external Innovation and Research institutions, incubators and organizations.
  • Collaborate with architects, product managers, incubation principals, research advisors and partners.
  • Build and maintain productive working relationships between business, I&T and innovation team.
  • Educate and communicate innovation engine principals and objectives.
  • Be a Champion and Thought Leader for innovation and effective change
Working Conditions
  • Occasional business travel (in Canada and US) in accordance with CN policy
RequirementsExperience
  • Minimum 10 years of relevant work experience, ideally with a focus on transportation in one of the following areas:
1. Operational Research, AI, IT and/or Data Science; or2. Computer Science; or3. Electrical and/or Telecom engineering; or4. Mechanical engineering or Innovation engineering.
  • Experience in innovation is considered an important asset
Education/Certification/Designation
  • Minimum Bachelors degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Science, Operational Research, AI, Mathematics or a related technical subject area.
  • Professional Engineering designation or IT Architecture certification(s) would be considered an important asset
Competencies
  • Ability to perform research, analysis, design, planning and financial estimations.
  • Creative, outside-the-box problem solver able to recognize and develop big picture approaches and strategies.
  • Ability to lead many different activities simultaneously - very strong time management skills
  • Thought leader in continuous improvement and innovation*
  • Any skills/attributes for these above would be considered as an asset
Technical Skills/Knowledge
  • Broad based understanding of one, or more, of these particular domains: (1) AI and/or Operations Research; (2) Computer Science; (3) Electrical and/or Telecom Engineering; (4) Mechanical or Innovation Engineering
  • Strong knowledge of collaboration tools and Microsoft suite including MS Project
