Job Description

Health & Safety SpecialistHealth and SafetyThe Calgary Drop-In Centre (the DI) is more than an emergency shelter. We provide essential care, health services, employment training, and housing support to people who need help. Our programs and services connect people to permanent housing that meets their individual needs. Rooted in community and fueled by kindness, the DI proudly serves as part of the Homeless-Serving System of Care.Position SummaryReporting to the Senior Manager, Health, Safety & Enviornment, the Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for working as part of a team responsible for the administration, implementation, and stewarding of the HSE program for the Agency.Time CommitmentForty hours per week at the discretion of, and in agreement with, the Snr Manager, HSE. We recognize the need to be available to employees for assistance, so there may be work required in the evenings or during weekends from time to time. This will always be planned and agreed to in advance. The schedule may be altered at the discretion of management.Job Duties

  • Assist the Snr Manager, HSE, in activities to ensure compliance and completion of Health and Safety related tasks. Respond to and investigate ongoing Health & Safety Reports, including appropriate cataloging, reporting, and follow-up on corrective actions to ensure their completion
  • Regular in-person interaction with staff in all areas of the DI
  • Ensure the Safety Data Sheet (SDS) of all controlled products on site is always up‐to‐date and accessible to all employees
  • Work with other key stakeholders within and outside the HSE department to ensure audit readiness
  • Oversee hazard assessments and inspections
  • Coordinate and manage Toolbox-Tailgate meetings and Health, Safety, and Wellness Committee meetings
  • Audit all safety reports and ensure action is taken when necessary
  • Create procedural documentation and updates as required
  • Stay abreast of all applicable legislation and flag changes for integration within the Agency
  • Assist with training and coaching of other individuals both within the team and outside of the team
  • Participate in Leader on Call duties
Required Competencies
  • Post-Secondary Safety related degree or diploma will be considered an asset; however, a combination of education and work experience will also be considered
  • Minimum 3 years of progressive responsibility in HSE administration
  • NCSO Certification is an asset
  • Familiar with COR Certification Program
  • Experience or familiarity with Workers’ Compensation and Claims Management
  • Familiar with government regulations relating to Health and Safety
  • Strong knowledge of investigation techniques, ability to determine root causes, and propose corrective actions
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work collaboratively within the DI
  • Excellent communications skills, both verbal and written
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to improve processes
  • Must demonstrate initiative and ability to work autonomously
  • Some travel to other DI locations within Calgary will be required from time to time
  • Proficient in Office365 and Microsoft Office Suite 2016
  • Skilled and capable of speaking to groups or in front of teams
  • Eager to learn new systems and adopt improved best practices
