The successful candidate will perform full support on the patent prosecution process for one or more professionals. This role can be based in any of the following Gowling WLG (Canda) LLP offices: Vancouver, Calgary, Hamilton, Waterloo, Ottawa, Toronto or Montreal.Gowling WLG employees benefit from a hybrid work environment.RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Organize and expedite the flow of work through the Professional’s office, initiating follow-up action.
  • Engaging in the management of the professional’s practice.
  • Systematically organizes, tracks and maintains document files and case correspondence, using, where appropriate, computer databases and imaging software.
  • Liaise between the Professional’s various internal and external individuals, groups, and clients at all levels.
  • Prepare legal documents with little or no direction according to general precedents or instructions from Professional; letters, memos, etc. of a confidential nature, which may be drafted independently for review by supervisor or may be prepared from dictation or hard copy.
  • Assisting in the prosecution of patent applications in Canada and the United States including drafting patent documentation, corresponding with the Patent Offices, corresponding with agents in foreign countries and reporting to and obtaining instructions from clients.
  • Managing international patent portfolios and deadlines.
  • Accessing and monitoring the status of applications on the Canadian and US patent databases.
  • Forward or respond to routine correspondence not requiring the Professional’s attention.
  • Manage the bring-forward or diary system/database to ensure important dates/deadlines are met.
  • Communicates directly with service providers and judicial/tribunal officials in connection with the client’s file.
  • Prepare special reports, which may include gathering, analyzing and summarizing data.
  • Exercise initiative and judgement to relieve the professional of administrative detail.
  • Create, monitor and maintain client files for better file management and client service.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Post secondary education.
  • At least 8+years experience, ideally within Intellectual Property with a focus on Patents.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Produce a high quality and quantity of work product, occasionally under tight timelines.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Patent Act and Rules and the Industrial Design Act and Rules
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
  • Able to prioritize and redefine priorities when necessary.
  • Handle stress in a business-like manner.
  • Strong work ethic, excellent attention to detail, highly organized and proactive.
  • Capacity to work independently with initiative and exercise sound judgement with minimal supervisor.
  • Ability to work in a team environment with a professional demeanour.
  • Ability to independently learn and use electronic tools, systems and applications.
