Our purpose is to future proof our cities and environments.The Opportunity:WSP E&I Canada has a permanent employment opportunity for a Junior Vegetation / Wetland Ecologist, based in Calgary, Alberta (Edmonton location may be considered).You will have the opportunity to work as part of our Environmental and Regulatory team to contribute to the environmental planning and permitting efforts of government, infrastructure, oil and gas and renewable energy projects.   • Air photo or satellite photo interpretation;
  • Vegetation (including ecosite phase) and wetland mapping;
  • Support or lead wetland and vegetation assessments under the Alberta Wetland Policy, including field assessments, functional assessments, classification and field and map-based delineations;
  • Conduct field wetland and vegetation assessments including inventories, rare plant surveys, weed surveys and wetland evaluations;
  • Complete field data analysis and interpretation, report writing and client/project coordination;
  • Support preparation of proposals including scopes of work and budget estimates for review by senior professionals;
  • Prepare technical reports in support of impact assessment studies and regulatory permit applications, including preparation of Alberta Wetland Rapid Evaluation Tool – Actual (ABWRET-A) and ABWRET-D forms; and
  • Work closely with a multi-disciplinary team of professionals and technical experts in biology and environmental science.

    • Guide for Assessing Permanence of Wetland Basins (AEP 2014)
    The successful candidate should expect to spend time in the field, including working in remote locations. To meet the physical demands required of this position, candidates must be in good physical condition and willing to work in a variety of weather conditions.This is an early-career position for an individual with a either a university degree or diploma in environmental sciences with 2-5 years of experience. WSP E&I Canada will mentor the preferred candidate having the required education, but previous experience of least two previous seasons of vegetation or wetland fieldwork, ABWRET A and D, air photo interpretation, and reporting in Alberta would be an asset.Skills & QualificationsThe following skills / qualifications are required:
    • Diploma or B.Sc. in science, agriculture or related training in wetlands, botany, ecology, hydrology, or equivalent demonstrated experience.
    • Two or more years of relevant field experience or environmental consulting.
    • Knowledge of and experience with the Alberta Wetland Policy, ABWRET-A and the Alberta Wetland Classification System. Formal completion of the ABWRET-A Wetland training is an asset.
    • Proven taxonomic vegetation identification skills including wetland indicators, rare plants, and weeds/exotic/horticultural species.
    • Proficiency in air photo/satellite imagery interpretation, classification and delineation of wetlands in Alberta.
    • Experience in preparing federal and provincial regulatory applications (including applications under the Alberta Water Act and Alberta Wetland Policy) is an asset.
    • Excellent written and verbal communication.
    • Strong commitment to health and safety.
    • Well organized, attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate and up to date field information.
    • Ability to coordinate project planning, logistics and preparation for field work.
    • Ability to use navigation tools to navigate to remote locations.
    • Ability to work within a team environment.
    • Proficient in suite of Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Certified in First Aid -Level C and CPR, Ground Disturbance Level II, Argo Operator certification and H2S alive certification is an asset.
    • Experience using ArcGIS software is an asset.
    • Working knowledge of the Canadian System of Soil Classification and AGRASID in an asset.
