Job Description

We have maintained our Platinum membership status since 2008.POSITION SUMMARYCANA Energy is seeking self-motivated, reliable Lead Hands to join our team in Calgary. Reporting to the Foreman the Lead Hand is an integral member of the crew, by supporting the site Foreman with the day to day construction planning and operations, training new crew members on company procedures and contract specifications.The Lead Hand will be responsible for the crew when the Foreman is not on site. This crew includes Equipment Operators, Labourers and Sub Contractors. As the Lead Hand you are expected to be engaged in our safety program, executing work in a safe manner, in adherence with CANA policies and all applicable code regulations and the Act.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Safe trenching practices combined with layout and planning of excavation work
  • Safe detour set up and removal for roadways according to Alberta Transportation
  • Expert understanding of existing buried facilities and safe excavation practices, Alberta One-Call, confined spaces and basic rigging requirement
  • Able to review Bill of Material and check the material requirement in advance of installation
  • Install pre-cast concrete structures, duct bank, BDII conduit, pull boxes, direct buried cable, direction Bore road crossing, hydro vac and install gas line and street lighting as required
  • Trench, sand pad and backfill shallow utilities
  • Review drawings mark up of “As Built” drawings and do unit counts as the build progresses
  • May be responsible for a company truck and/or trailer to perform site duties
  • Completion of daily logbook and submitted to Foreman on a weekly basis
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILTIESTo be successful in the role:
  • High School Diploma
  • 5 plus years in an underground distribution construction role
  • Valid driver’s license – Class 5 or above is considered an asset
  • Clean driver’s abstract
  • CSTS
  • Ground Disturbance Level 2
  • Additional Safety Tickets and certification including First Aid and Fall Protection are assets
  • Willing and able to commute to various job sites in and around the Calgary area. Reliable transportation is a must.
  • Must have knowledge of specifications and practices for underground shallow utilities construction
  • Previous Traffic Signal Experience
  • Knowledge of basic traffic signal construction layout and operation
  • Demonstrated knowledge of health and safety practices and procedures
  • Ability to read and understand drawings, specifications and technical information
  • Effective communicator of the English language – both written and verbal
  • Previous electrical utilities or gas experience, Backhoe or Trackhoe equipment operating experience or experience working in close proximity to active heavy machinery are all considered assets
WORKING CONDITIONSThe nature of this position requires physically demanding motions and tasks. Candidates are required to successfully complete a Pre-Employment Assessment including drug and alcohol screening and fitness test requiring the ability to lift 50 lbs repeatedly. CANA has projects all over Western Canada. Travel and shift work may be required with this position. Be prepared for the possibility of travel throughout Alberta. CANA Energy operates year-round and outdoors in all types of terrain and environments.
