Job Description

Position OverviewThe Advancement Data team in the Office of Advancement is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Manager, Advancement Analytics & Reporting for approximately 18 months.The Advancement Office exists for the mutual benefit of the University of Calgary and its stakeholders and coordinates Communications, Alumni Engagement and Development/Fundraising gifts and gifts-in-kind. The area is an active, community-oriented team that enhances Advancement efforts in support of the Universitys Academic and Research Plans.The Manager, Advancement Data Analytics & Reporting, reports directly to the Director, Advancement Data, and is responsible for all operational resource management associated with data preparation, warehousing, reporting, analytics, and performance forecasting & planning. The primary responsibility of this position will be managing the operations of the reporting and analytics team to enable successful design, development, and maintenance of all central Advancement dashboards/reports and reporting infrastructure. The manager will work closely with the Director, as well as other managers in the Advancement Data team and the leadership team of the Advancement Office to create a vision, strategy and plan for business intelligence, reporting and analytics. The manager will develop an annual plan for the team and build relationships with stakeholders to understand their needs in all aspects of building and delivery of Business Intelligence, Data Warehouse, Performance Management, and Analytics solutions for the Advancement Office.This position is responsible for designing and developing all Advancement dashboards/reports to meet user requests, departmental operations, as well as the strategic goals of the University and Advancement inter-University/industry benchmarking UCalgary participates in.. In addition this position will also be responsible for developing reporting standards, report usage guidelines, establishing report development and Business Intelligence (BI) best practice, and identifying, and deploying appropriate reporting tools. The manager will lead a team of senior analysts and data engineers who will design, develop and maintain the Advancement Office data warehouse, reporting infrastructure, and other analytical products.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Oversees the design, development, testing, deployment, and Training for all Power BI/Tableau/SSRS dashboards/reports developed by the Advancement Data team.
  • Works with business owners to define metrics and identify necessary dashboards needed and reporting standards. Ensures report quality and data accuracy/integrity.
  • Works in collaboration with the Data Systems team to manage the development, deployment, and sustainment of Advancements data warehouse, including dimensional data modelling.
  • Sets a vision for the analytics function within Advancement and develops a path for growth, including but not limited to: managing capacity issues, staffing and hiring, cross-team integration, establishing team goals, and identifying opportunities
  • Ensures sufficient redundancy to maintain reporting operational effectiveness/meet stakeholder needs, in light of staff turnover, unforeseen events etc.
  • Provide innovative insight through data and reports to meet business challenges, using tools such as Power BI, Tableau, and SSRS, among others.
  • Define structures, policies, processes and metrics to improve and maintain the quality and ownership of dashboards/reports and information assets
  • Evaluate data architectures and data flow diagrams, including processing and control points, transformation points and reconciliations
  • Develop conceptual and logical data and report models and ensure the effective flow and transformation of data, including through Advancements data warehouse.
  • Explore reporting integrations across Advancement and other University applications/data sources.
  • Develop strategic plans for data capture, retention and integration and data extraction
  • Support continuous improvement efforts around data accuracy and report quality
  • Collaborate with other units within Advancement Data team to complete task and projects
  • Manage projects related to report development and data extraction projects
  • Establish Enterprise report governance and report quality standards.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • A university degree/certification in business, computer science and proven experience with database management and/or program management
  • 5+ years of data management, data stewardship or data governance, business intelligence and reporting experience or equivalent in a related field.
  • Demonstrated leadership and supervisory abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of business intelligence, data analysis and report development through tools such as Power BI, Tableau, and SSRS
  • In depth understanding of one or more Database management systems (SQL server, Oracle etc.), and strong SQL coding skills.
  • Strong technical aptitude
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Excellent communication/Interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional, team based environment
  • Ability to identify and resolve data/report errors, ensuing a very high degree of report accuracy.
  • Must be an innovative thinker with high level of initiative, energy and enthusiasm.
  • Advanced knowledge of business intelligence, data warehouse and report building
  • Knowledge of fundraising analytics best practices
Preferred:
  • Experience with Blackbaud CRM (BB CRM) and Blackbaud Information Services (BB IS).
  • Application development and programming experience in Python, C#, Java, and/or .NET
  • Experience with business process mapping
  • Experience with change management and project management
  • Knowledge of SSIS, and other data flow technologies such as data virtualization.
