Job Description

Position OverviewThe VP Research is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Manager, Quantum City Training & Innovation for approximately 5 year.The University of Calgary (UCalgary) is creating a vibrant quantum economic and scientific hub based in Calgary "Quantum City" leveraging the leading quantum science and technology programs of Campus Alberta institutions and a burgeoning UCalgary innovation ecosystem. Quantum City outputs will the training of highly qualified personnel in quantum science discovery and applied areas.The Manager, Quantum City Training & Innovation reports to the Managing Director of Quantum City, and is responsible for the overall operation and leadership of the Quantum City training & innovation portfolio. The incumbent will participate in planning and development Quantum Citys training/educational and innovation programs, including policies, procedures, and services. The incumbent will implement and manage the established procedures and services in the portfolio.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):Operations

  • Manage the successful operation of the training and educational programs within Quantum City, including professional Masters programs
  • Liaise with Quantum Alberta groups and other eligible research groups who access the Quantum Citys Quantum Activator stipend as well as Innovation funding
  • Manage the competitive process to access the Quantum Citys Quantum Activator stipend as well as Innovation funding and ensure the process is transparent and fair
Leadership
  • Managerial discretion for direct reports, including performance management and discipline up to and including termination.
  • Promote a collaborative team environment through excellent role modeling and coaching, training, and assigning work fairly and in a way that ensures breadth of skill and development of the team.
  • Ensure that effective operations and a high level of quality assurance are maintained at all times, so that students and trainees consistently receive professional and fair treatment.
  • Provide strong leadership and uses excellent communication, problem-solving and analytical skills to lead and motivate individuals to work cohesively in a team environment.
  • Manage advising policies and procedures, ensuring they are developed in accordance with university processes, policies, and procedures
  • Ensure that important roles and functions such as Records Coordination and FOIP Administration are fulfilled within the Quantum City training and education programs, ensuring that all records/information/archives, and access to the same, are managed in accordance with university policy.
  • Provide an authoritative source of advice to a range of customers, including applicants, students, staff, and external stakeholders regarding the Quantum City training & education portfolio.
Strategy
  • Assist in the development, documentation and implementation of training and innovation programs that contribute to the mission of Quantum City
  • Collaborate and communicate with the campus community on issues related to audit assessment, compliance, confidentiality, system requirements, and changes in policies and procedures.
  • Work with the communications teams to oversee and coordinate the maintenance, accuracy and consistency of information
  • Work with the Director, Quantum City to implement new degree programs
  • Prepare (or oversee) reports and surveys, and evaluate data to support effective decision making related to the training & innovation portfolio
  • Perform other related tasks that support the achievement of the Quantum Citys strategic direction and vision
Financial Accountability
  • Provide input to the annual budgeting process and giving appropriate consideration to budget when making operational decisions.
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree or similar required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience, including 3 in a university environment required.
  • Previous experience working with post-secondary students, research institutes and funding agencies is required.
  • Excellent leadership skills, with an ability to work independently and as part of a team, be proactive and self-directed.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete process improvement using technology both within and across units. Demonstrated ability to supervise, organize, motivate, manage performance, mentor and develop staff.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts related to highly sensitive and confidential matters, and dealing with escalated and/or emotional issues empathetically and professionally.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement strategies to provide value-added service to students and the campus community.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the framework for the University of Calgary graduate degrees and related policies and procedures, particularly for programs in the Faculty of Science.
  • Knowledge of policies, procedures and practices related to student affairs.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to establish priorities, manage multiple demands and meet deadlines.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze business needs and participate in the development of budgets, goals, objectives, policies and procedures; including aligning staff and resources to achieve targets.
  • Expertise with student related university business systems such as PeopleSoft, Oracle, Calendar, D2L, and Microsoft Office applications and the ability to develop processes and utilize technology to increase efficiencies.
