Job Description

Position OverviewThe Deans Office in the Haskayne School of Business invites applications for a Manager, Stream (CDL-Rockies . This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.The Creative Destruction Lab-Rockies (CDL-Rockies) is a cohort-based university-linked new venture accelerator program at the Haskayne School of Business. CDL-Rockies helps innovators transition from science projects to high-growth companies, inviting some of the worlds top, early-stage technology ventures to Calgary for this innovative 9-month program. After a rigorous application and selection process, the CDL-Rockies program engages senior entrepreneurial leaders, as well as noted scientists, economists, investors and graduate students in the support of new venture founders with a goal to prepare these founders for seed stage financing and accelerated growth.CDL-Rockies is built upon the original CDL model, developed at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto in 2012. The CDL network has to date created over $6 billion in equity value for participating ventures in a seven-year period of time, while educating thousands of students and creating new and unique job opportunities for graduates and the broader ecosystem.The achievement of these milestones (well beyond the original 5-year goal) is testament to the CDL culture, which we work to emulate at CDL-Rockies. The CDL culture is one that engages a team of brilliant people with significant relationship acumen, a strong sales orientation, an innovative mindset, and relentless ambition to create the foundation for world-class venture acceleration.Globally, the CDL network includes sites located in the business and management schools in the Universities of British Columbia, Calgary, Oxford, Toronto, Wisconsin-Madison and Washington; Dalhousie University; HEC Montreal and Paris; and the Georgia Institute of Technology.Extended or alternative hours (evenings and weekends) and travel will be required based on the needs of CDL-Rockies. This position is required to maintain complete confidentiality regarding all business matters and to exercise a high degree of professionalism in the execution of his/her duties.Reporting to Director of Programming, the Stream Manager (Energy) is responsible for leading the recruitment, analysis, evaluation and selection of high-potential ventures into the program as well as overseeing the team that facilitates the relationships between ventures and mentors for the Energy Stream at CDL-Rockies.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):This position will be responsible for managing a team of venture leaders as it recruits, selects, supports, and advises the ventures that participate in the CDL program each year. Duties related to this accountability include:

  • Directly manage and oversee a team of three including two venture leaders and one student analysts.
  • Direct and conduct full cycle recruitment, training and development, performance reviews and annual increases.
  • Manages performance, disciplinary action and termination of staff reporting to the position.
  • Challenges others to develop as leaders while serving as a role model and mentor.
  • Lead and manage the team, fostering a team-based culture, ensuring positive interactions with other team members and collaborators.
  • Scopes student projects, hires additional students as required, and participates in their supervision.
  • Collaborates with the Director of Programming and CDL-Rockies Site Lead to develop long-term strategies and goals to increase ventures applying for the program.
  • Executes outreach strategy for recruitment of incoming cohort
  • Manage the outreach to high priority founders on an individual basis throughout the year.
  • Manages events to increase awareness, knowledge and participation of CDL Rockies.
  • Establish and manage relationships with centres of innovation in Western Canadian & US Universities, venture capital funds, incubators & accelerators, and tech associations to build a strong pipeline of CDL applicants.
  • The Stream Manager will directly manage approximately five ventures each year. This requires:
  • Acts as coordinator between ventures, mentors, scientists, and students
  • Supports ongoing communication with founders
  • Develops documentation to support CDL programming
  • Manages documentation workflow (Venture Summaries, Venture updates, Meeting Schedules, etc.)
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Graduate degree in a relevant field and / or MBA.
  • Minimum of five years experience in the energy sector and / or new venture / start-up space.
  • Experience leading teams and working in senior startup / technology company leadership roles.
  • Strong analytical ability and understanding of business models and drivers of success in startups across several verticals.
  • Deep financial literacy specific to new venture fundraising and venture deals.
  • Highly motivated with strong interest in all aspects of relationship management.
  • Ability to analyze and systematically evaluate ventures - proficient with financial modelling, conducting market analysis, and strategic planning.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and public speaking skills.
  • Passion to consistently meet or exceed performance objectives.
  • Highly organized with strong project management experience
  • Entrepreneurial and highly motivated with strong interest in startups and venture capital
  • Passion to consistently meet or exceed performance objectives
  • Strong, team-oriented work ethic with willingness to work independently and autonomously
  • Previous experience founding a startup is an asset.
  • Experience working as consultant or advisor to startup companies is an asset.
