Job Description

The Alberta Electric System Operator (AESO) is responsible for the safe, reliable, and economic planning and operation of the Alberta Interconnected Electric System. We provide open and non-discriminatory access to Alberta’s interconnected power grid and also facilitate Alberta’s competitive wholesale electricity market. The AESO strives to foster an inclusive, diverse and equitable workplace where people feel respected and welcomed for who they are, together we deliver high performance and innovative results.Job DescriptionThe Markets & Tariff team have an exciting opportunity for a Manager, Tariff. The Tariff team designs and implements the ISO tariff which recovers the cost of the transmission system from users and defines system access requirements to the transmission system. This is a powerful role! You will play a key role in enabling the transformation of the province’s electricity sector through Tariff Modernization activities to evolve and simplify the ISO tariff, making it more adaptable and accessible. You’ll lead planning, analysis, design, stakeholder engagement, regulatory process and implementation related to the ISO Tariff. This team monitors external signals and threats to prioritize required tariff revisions, evaluate options, identify risks and mitigation, works with internal and external stakeholders to propose changes, develop regulatory applications and implement approved changes. The Tariff team also implements the ISO tariff through rates and riders as well as the application of the ISO tariff terms and conditions, with a focus on consistent application/interpretation and continual efficiency improvements.Key aspects of the role:

  • Lead a team of tariff experts as well as cross-collaborative teams to achieve tariff deliverables and objectives
  • Collaborate with leaders to set out the vision for the ISO tariff to guide department priorities and activities
  • Develop process and procedures to monitor, adapt and implement the ISO tariff
  • Build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including Alberta Utilities Commission (AUC), Department of Energy (DOE), other electric utilities, customers and business leaders as they relate to the ISO tariff
  • Lead development of analysis and recommendations, lead stakeholder engagement activities, collaborate with other agencies, support application preparation and act as a witness during proceedings
  • Enable strategic tariff analysis and proposals as required to ensure that analysis and design supports robust decisions and regulatory applications
  • Explore and leverage new techniques to build understanding with stakeholders to support regulatory efficiency
  • Lead the development of documentation and training to ensure collaborative, consistent and efficient tariff application across the AESO

  • Solid understanding of policies, tariffs and/or rules within the utility industry experience
  • Worked in a role that influenced the development and/or implementation of policies, tariffs and/or rules
  • Experience in tariff design, tariff implementation, transmission planning and/or rate design is an asset
  • Experience in regulatory proceedings
  • Experience leading teams and complex work
  • Project Management fundamentals
