Accommodations are available during the hiring process, upon request.As a Pathways and Trails Technician, you will support the day-to-day operations and maintenance of City-wide pathways and trails, plan and implement capital and operational projects to develop and maintain pathways infrastructure; as an expert, provide guidance and direction to field and inspection crews, staff in other business units and external contractors.Primary duties include:

  • Create maps, using GIS, for internal and external clients to illustrate and verify pathways, including closures, detours and planned construction to support annual inspections, lifecycle and maintenance projects and the review of pathway and bikeway applications; publish maps on Calgary.ca and distributes to Councillors’ offices.
  • Plan, implement and oversee seasonal pathways capital and operational work.
  • Provide support to seasonal inspection and field crews and staff in other business units by providing expertise, tools (e.g. maps, inspection forms and asset tables) and procedures (e.g. Pathway Closure and Detour Guidelines).
  • Coach and train crews on inspection methods (e.g. use of spatial data).
  • Investigate and respond to a variety of pathways-related inquiries from several sources.
  • Collect and compile data and presents recommendations to the Parks Pathways Lead.
  • Review Development Applications and provides comments on Plan Circulations for area development, where there could be impacts on pathways.
Qualifications
  • A completed 2 year diploma and at least 4 years of experience working with GIS or other asset management systems; OR
  • Degree in field such as Geography – GIS or a related field and at least 2 years of experience working with GIS or other asset management systems.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s License (or provincial equivalency) with no more than 6 demerits OR a Class 5 Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) with no more than 4 demerits, and no current charges or suspension pending is required.
  • Experience with ESRI platforms such as ArcGIS Pro & ArcGIS Online and related software platforms would be considered assets.
  • Experience with Parks Oracle WAM systems software would be considered assets.
  • Ability to work both independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Excellent communication skills with a strong customer service focus.
  • Demonstrate good problem solving, judgement and decision-making skills.
Working Conditions: Drives to various worksites & works outside when inspecting pathways assets.Pre-employment Requirements
  • Must obtain a City of Calgary operators permit
  • Successful applicants must provide proof of qualifications.
