CPA Alberta’s legislated mandate is to protect the interest of the public, protect the integrity of the profession, promote and increase the competence of Alberta CPAs, and regulate the conduct of Alberta CPAs.CPA Alberta has offices in Edmonton and Calgary and provides hybrid Telecommuting opportunities.Further information can be found on our website: www.cpaalberta.ca/About-Us/Careers-at-CPA-Alberta.The RoleAre you a payroll specialist who provides exceptional customer service and has a business-partner mindsetThe Payroll and Benefits Specialist is a key position within CPA Alberta responsible for multiple financial activities related to the timely and accurate delivery of the organizational semi-monthly payroll function. Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Payroll and Benefits Specialist requires strong knowledge of payroll compliance and legislation, along with general accounting principles and procedures.To succeed in this position you need high attention to detail, a strong focus on deadlines and to be results-oriented. You will demonstrate a strong code of ethics, conduct, confidentiality and professionalism.Please note this is a 1-year contract position to cover a leave.Key ResponsibilitiesPayroll

  • Prepare and administer the semi-monthly payroll to ensure that employees of CPA Alberta are paid accurately and on time
  • Reconcile and report on payroll accounts and variances; ensure accurate expense and liability accounts are recorded accurately
  • Annual production and filing of year-end T4s and T4As, the Workers Compensation Board (WCB) return and supporting documents
  • Provide payroll information for the filing of tax returns and other taxation matters
  • Maintain and update payroll processes, workflows and guidelines; recommend and implement improvements in the payroll and internal control processes
  • Partner with Human Resources to ensure accurate and timely processing of new hires, maternity leaves, departures and salary increases
  • Identify legal requirements and government reporting regulations affecting payroll functions and ensure policies, procedures and reporting are in compliance
  • Ensure the integrity and safety of confidential payroll information
  • Provide timely response to employee payroll inquiries and requests from other external stakeholders such as ServiceCanada and CRA
Benefits
  • Complete the month end accruals and reconciliation of benefit accounts and payroll
  • Partner with Human Resources in the administration of the group benefits plan including reconciliation and remittance of monthly premiums
  • Administer Group RRSP/TFSA remittances
  • Administer the Employee Public Transit program
Reporting
  • Timely remittance and reporting of statutory deductions in compliance with regulations
  • Analyze, compile and report payroll statistics to government agencies, e.g. CRA, HRSDC
  • Monthly variance analysis, reporting, and forecasting of salaries and benefits
  • In consultation with the Human Resources Manager, draft the annual salaries and benefits budget
Requirements
  • A Certified Payroll designation (through the National Payroll Institute) along with 5 years of payroll and benefits administration experience
  • Significant working experience in accounting software and performing basic accounting functions such as journal entries and reconciliations
  • Advanced level of proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Intermediate level of proficiency in Microsoft Word and Outlook
  • Strong initiative and self-motivation; exceptional organizational, prioritization, and time management skills to meet strict deadlines
  • Proven ability to effectively multi-task in a fast-paced deadline driven environment
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills
  • Portrays professionalism and exemplifies exceptional customer service. Has a business partner mindset.
  • Maintains objectivity, is insightful, proactive, and future-focused
  • Experience with UltiPro HRIS and Microsoft Great Plains is an asset
  • Experience processing with in-house payroll systems an asset
  • Some formal accounting education at the post-secondary level considered an asset

Working Conditions
