The Team:West Oak Family Office is a multi-family office located in Calgary Alberta with over $1 Billion in Assets Under Administration (AUA). More than a traditional wealth management offering, West Oak Family Office provides a platform for high and ultra-high-net-worth families which is fully integrated, independent, and dedicated to the families they serve, with a long-term focus on each family’s success.In addition to Wellington-Altus’ total rewards program, the West Oak team is pleased to offer benefits to their team such as maternity top-up, paid volunteer days, and a flexible remote-work program.The opportunity:Reporting to the Senior Investment Advisors, the Portfolio Manager will provide a comprehensive range of wealth management services to clients.The Portfolio Manager leads business development and client origination, and participates in the investment and financial planning process for clients. They may also be responsible for supervising and mentoring junior staff.Key responsibilities include:
  • Meeting with existing and potential clients, and completing in-depth fact-finding to help clients discover and articulate their short- and long-term goals.
  • Managing and growing an existing client base through networking, marketing, and sales.
  • Executing portfolio transactions within the guidelines of individual client Investment Policy Statements.
  • Contributing to bulk trading and allocations across multiple accounts.
  • Incorporating a comprehensive understanding of the regulatory environment in which Wellington-Altus operates.
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with Centers of Influence; collaborating and work closely with clients and other professional advisors in the spirit of delivering a holistic experience.
  • Proactively maintaining current and in-depth knowledge of all areas of the wealth management process, including financial, investment, education, risk management, retirement, tax, and wealth transfer planning.
  • Developing and implementing tools for financial analysis.
  • Creating reports and providing recommendations on capital management.
  • Analyzing the effectiveness of sales strategy, costs, and results.
  • Performing other duties as assigned to support the clients and team.
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A bachelor’s degree in business, finance, investment, or a related field is an asset.
  • Current licensing as Advising Representative or an Associate Advising Representative with the Alberta Securities Commissions, or currently licensed as a Portfolio Manager with IIROC.
    • Note: Candidates who hold the AAR/AR license must have previous experience working in and IIROC environment.
  • 5-10 years experience as a registered PM or APM.
  • Successful completion of the following courses;
    • Canadian Securities Course (CSC);
    • Conduct and Practices Handbook Course (CPH);
    • Canadian Investment Manager (CIM);
    • Chartered Investment Manager Designation or CFA Designation is an asset.
    • Insurance licensing, CFP, PFP, CLU, CHS, CEA designations all considered assets.
  • Financial planning experience is considered an asset.
  • Strong analytical and financial analysis skills and capital markets experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and a commitment to stay abreast of changes.
  • Exceptional organizational skills with excellent attention to detail to ensure financial and regulatory requirements are adhered to at all times.
  • An ability to adapt quickly to changing needs and work requirements, with the ability to navigate fluctuations in work volume to meet client and operational requirements.
  • An ability to maintain composure and communicate effectively in high-stress situations.
  • A high level of proficiency in Microsoft Office tools; experience with financial tools is an asset.
Conditions of employment:
  • Must be legally eligible to work in Canada.
  • Current licensing as Advising Representative or an Associate Advising Representative with the Alberta Securities Commissions, or currently licensed as a Portfolio Manager with IIROC, with the ongoing requirement to fulfill Continuing Education requirements.
  • A background check, satisfactory to the employer, may be required of the successful applicant prior to commencing employment.
