Job Description

Position DescriptionArea: Viral OncogenesisDuration: Contract for 1 year, renewable for up to 5 years.Start Date: Oct 1, 2022 - Jan 1, 2023.Applications will be accepted until the best match is found.Salary: 45,000 to 50,000 $CAD per year commensurate with experience (plus Alberta Blue Cross health insurance benefits)The Department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar to study Kaposis sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) oncogenesis in Dr. Jennifer Corcorans lab.Twitter: Corcoran Lab@corcoran_labJoin a lively, productive, and growing virology laboratory; collaborate with Canadian and international scientists working in the KSHV oncogenesis field; and learn cutting-edge techniques such as single-cell RNA sequencing and synthetic virology! The Corcoran lab is seeking a motivated and hard-working postdoctoralscholar for Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)- funded research on the oncogenic virus, Kaposis sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV).The Corcoran lab is seeking a motivated and hard-working postdoctoral scholar for a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)- funded project on the role of the Kaposis sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) kaposin locus in latency establishment after primary infection. KSHV causes the endothelial cell cancer, Kaposis sarcoma (KS). Unlike many tumours caused by viruses, KS maintenance and spread relies on KSHV replication. For KSHV primary infection to establish a latent infection, the virus induces an initial burst of viral gene expression and genome copying while also limiting cellular antiviral responses designed to reduce its replication. We seek to better understand these steps using a resource unique to our lab, a suite of KSHV mutants targeting the viral kaposin locus. We have discovered that all kaposin-deficient mutants tested displayed defects in genome copying after primary infection. We are now engaged in the fascinating analysis of this phenotype using single-cell RNA sequencing, chromatin immunoprecipitation, and advanced immunofluorescence microscopy including DNA and RNA fluorescent in situ hybridization.Kleer, MacNeil, Adam, Pringle, and Corcoran. A Panel of Kaposis Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus Mutants in the Polycistronic Kaposin Locus for Precise Analysis of Individual Protein Products. 2022. J Virol. Mar9;96(5):e0156021. doi: 10.1128/JVI.01560-21.The postdoctoral scholar will report to Dr. Jennifer Corcoran and work alongside a vibrant and diverse group of doctoral and masters trainees in the Corcoran lab. The Corcoran lab is a welcoming and inclusive work environment where students and employees receive weekly guidance and mentorship from Dr. Corcoran. With this project, the postdoctoral scholar will have the opportunity to further develop skills in molecular cloning/recombinant virology, primary cell culture, advanced fluorescent microscopy techniques including fluorescent in situ hybridization, chromatin immunoprecipitation, mass spectrometry and singlecell RNA sequencing. These techniques will permit study of the fascinating interplay between KSHV and cellular DNA damage responses as it pertains to viral primary infection and replication. In addition, the postdoctoral scholar will be provided with career development opportunities including but not limited to the mentorship of junior trainees working on the project. This is a full-time, fixed-term position for one year. The period of employment may be extended depending on satisfactory performance. Funds are available for this project for five years.Qualifications:

  • Recent* PhD in molecular virology or a closely related field.
  • Experience with molecular cloning is essential; experience with recombinant virology is an asset.
  • Experience with standard molecular biology techniques and immunofluorescent microscopy is essential; experience with chromatin immunoprecipitation or DNA damage responses will be deemed an asset
  • Experience with the biology of herpesviruses or oncogenic viruses preferred
  • Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) including strong listening skills, as evidenced by a record of publication, presentation, and scholarship
  • Ability to work in a team environment, as evidenced by a track record of collaborative publication.
  • Strong organizational, time management and problem-solving skills, while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail
  • An understanding of statistical packages for data analysis and interpretation.
  • Enthusiasm for academic research and mentorship of junior trainees.
  • Please review the Postdoc Eligibility Guidelines for more information prior to applying for this position.
Application Details:Interested applicants should contact Dr. Jennifer Corcoran via email jennifer.corcoran@ucalgary.ca. Inquiries must include a cover letter summarizing the applicants relevant experience and the reason for their interest in the position as well as a detailed curriculum vitae and the contact information for three academic references. Initial interviews will be conducted via Zoom. Enthusiastic applicants are encouraged to contact Dr. Corcoran as soon as possible as funds are immediately available for this project.Additional InformationTo learn more about postdoctoral scholar opportunities at the University of Calgary and all we have to offer, view our Postdoc Careers website.
