Job Description

Position OverviewThe Department of Chemistry in the Faculty of Science invites applications for a Research Assoicate. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.The position will be affiliated with the Chemistry Department and Centre for Molecular Simulation (CMS). The project is in collaboration between an industrial partner and three faculty members within the Department of Chemistry at University of Calgary.The Research Associate will report directly to three (3) Principal Investigators and the industrial partner.Regular collaboration with other team members is expected and encouraged. Planning activities with the team of the industrial partner are part of the position. The research associate will conduct her/his project planning in accordance with the rest of the research team and perform computational modelling and lab experiments at University of Calgary and the industrial partners site. Research Associates work 35 hours per week and are part of the AUPE group.The position will be affiliated with the Chemistry Department and Centre for Molecular Simulation (CMS). The project is in collaboration between an industrial partner and three (3)faculty members, at the Department of Chemistry at University of Calgary.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Ability to work at University of Calgary and industrial partners site
  • Literature review on the production and stability of gas nanobubbles in various media
  • Review of the current methods of nanobubble generation, identifying bubble and solution characteristics and the bubble concentrations produced by each
  • Preparation of nano-emulsion fuels samples
  • Lab scale production of water-in-diesel nano-emulsions using treated water and/or diesel; testing impact of high concentrations of nanobubbles on the stability of the nano-emulsions
  • Test water-in-diesel nano-emulsions in diesel engines and identify optimized concentrations of gas nanobubbles based on the emissions and fuel consumption data
  • Publication of results in peer-review journals is anticipated
  • Regular meetings with the supervisor (e.g. bi-weekly meetings, as well as interactions on a day to day basis) and collaborators to provide update on status of computational and experimental results
  • Presentation of results to team meetings (e.g. once a month) and to the industrial partners
  • Project representation at international conferences
  • Understanding of standard operating procedures of the equipment used in the experimental protocols.
  • Maintenance of a clean and safe laboratory work area
  • Effective time-management for timely completion of project work and yearly contributions of research updates to program sponsors.
  • Performance of other duties, as assigned by the Research Supervisor
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • PhD degree in an area of Computational Chemistry, Chemical/Mechanical engineering, or a relevant field.
  • Proven hands-on expertise in synthesis and production of water-in-diesel emulsions
  • Proven hands-on expertise in modelling of complex environments using classical and quantum mechanical simulation methods
  • Previous experience with surfactants
  • Knowledge of surfactant chemistry (solubility in water and fuel, etc) and properties (HLB, surface/interfacial tension, etc)
  • Industrial chemistry and feedstocks related to surfactants
  • Proven hands-on expertise in working with quantum chemical and molecular simulation software, advanced research computing and Linux shell
  • Experience with diesel engines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with proven experience in scientific publishing or grant writing.
  • Must be comfortable working in a diverse research team and have excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ability and willingness to mentor and train early career scientists (e.g. upper level undergraduate and graduate students)
It would be advantageous if the candidate has any of the followings:
  • Micro and nano-emulsions
  • Diesel fuel properties (calorific value, flash point, viscosity, etc)
  • Dynamic light scattering (DLS) and nano-particle tracking analysis (NTA)
  • Surface and interfacial tension measurements
  • Experience with GCMS and FTIR analysis
