Job Description

Position OverviewThe Department of Geography in the Faculty of Arts invites applications for a Research Associate, Hydrology. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 12 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.The successful candidate will report to the principal investigator and will work in collaboration with their research group UC-HAL. The position is comprised of technical, research, and project management functions related to research topics in integrated climate-hydrologic uncertainty modelling. General instructions will be provided, and the employee will need to make decisions about how the work will be completed within set timelines. The position is based at the University of Calgary but remote work will be accepted.The primary purpose of this position is to assist with the Primary Investigators ongoing research in integrated climate-hydrologic modelling. The Research Associates responsibilities include project management, model setup/design and testing, data analysis, and reporting. The work will involve numerical modeling, coding, and development of code standards and open-source analytical software for hydrologic uncertainty analyses. These purposes must all be met while maintaining accurate safety and legislated policies within the University.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Work will be within an integrated climate-hydrologic-ocean modeling framework, which will require integrating model inputs/outputs.
  • Expectation to interpret climatic data variability into hydrological models, therefore understanding of uncertainty propagation and hydrologic risk analysis.
  • Adhere to modelling methods, relevant standard procedures, and coding protocols and apply these standards.
  • Maintain technical codes and continuously update
  • Maintain regular reporting protocols and record keeping
  • Analyse and interpret model output to perform specialized statistical analyses and climate data assessments
  • Work in an inter-disciplinary team, participate in coaching peers, and receiving guidance from multiple supervisors
  • Provide advice to supervisors on complex, project-based decisions and directions, actively participating in team brain storming activities
  • Work independently day-to-day, with guidance from supervisor(s) who identify major deliverables and directions
  • Prepare and lead scientific articles for submission to peer-reviewed journals
  • Engage and communicate with industry partners and research collaborators
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Graduate level experience (MSc, MEng or equivalent) specializing in computational hydrology or water resources engineering or equivalent experience are required.
  • A track record of peer-reviewed publications in the field of climate-hydrologic uncertainty modelling.
  • 4-6 years of experience with integrating multiple types of models, including climate (CMIP5 or 6, CaPA), hydrological(specifically HYPE, HEC-HMS, WATFLOOD and VIC)
  • Expertise with ArcGIS and/or QGIS and development of visualization dashboards
  • Expertise with Canadas hydrometric data network and/or meteorological data networks
  • Advanced analytical and scripting software experience (Matlab and/or R, advanced knowledge of Fortran language, advanced Excel capabilities and macros); experience with machine learning algorithms
  • Knowledge of large Canadian watersheds and hydrology (specifically Nelson-Churchill watershed)
  • Experience with server-based computing environments and high-performance computing, including large data management
  • Experience analyzing uncertainty in large scale hydrological systems impacted by climate and human regulation, and the interface between freshwater and marine systems
  • Strong problem solving skills and trouble shooting skills
  • Strong communication skills (oral + written)
  • Excellent project and time management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills demonstrated by outreach activities (related to water resources)
  • Familiar with University culture and environments within research-intensive Canadian institutions, including reporting protocols for major granting agencies (i.e., NSERC)
  • GIS experience an asset
  • Experience managing field monitoring sites and collecting scientific data an asset
