Position OverviewThe Department of Paediatrics in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Scientist. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.This position reports to the Principal Investigator, director of the Calgary Pediatric BCI Program (BCI4kids).Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):Research & Project ManagementResponsible for the operation and actualization of numerous multi-disciplinary projects under strict deadlinesTake responsibility for successful completion of projects from the conception stage through the submission of all contract deliverables and project closureDevelops operating procedures, safety protocols, maintains regulatory compliance, and makes recommendation on workflow improvementsResponsible for reliable and safe operation of all laboratory equipmentAcquire, operate and maintain complex technical equipmentResearch Strategy & LeadershipAlong with the Principal Investigator, develop and implement the strategic vision of the research project(s) and research groupSupervise a multi-disciplinary team and help execute day-to-day research operationsTrains others in the operation of equipment and laboratory protocols, while maintaining a clean and safe areaClosely work with trainees, engineers, software designers, clinicians, and patients to design, develop, and realize high-quality BCI systems and softwareUnderstanding of safety codes, standards, and systems related to specializationParticipate in high level funding and research strategy sessions and organize competitive funding applicationsCommunication & OutreachEstablish and maintains effective, productive relationships with staff, peers, immediate supervisor and senior management and with the campus communityAct as primary liaison between research team, national, and international collaboratorsProvide leadership and support to help grow a multi-site, international network exploring pediatric brain-computer interfaceDemonstrate strong communication, team and customer service skills, and an ability to exercise judgment within established guidelinesTranslate knowledge in pediatric BCI to patients, parents, visitors, clinicians, administrators, researchers, stakeholders, policy makers, and the communityEngage in exploring commercialization and technology transfer opportunities within the University environment and in collaboration with industry partnersQualifications / Requirements:Terminal degree (e.g. PhD.) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Digital Signal Processing, Biomedical Engineering, Mathematical, Computer or other basic sciences5+ years of experience in scientific research and development environments. (Neuroscience/Biomedical Engineering preferred)3+ years of experience in BCI specific research and developmentHighly proficient in multiple programming languages commonly used in contemporary investigations and analysis for neuroscience, e.g. Python, MATLAB, R, C++, C#, JavaScript, etc.Expertise in the acquisition and analysis of EEG and/or other neurological or bio-signals (e.g. ECoG, EMG, fNIRS, etc.)Familiarity with multiple brain-computer interface (BCI) systems, particularly for pediatric populationsExperience in supporting and guiding trainees and/or junior members of staffEvidence of leadership and collaboration in teamwork-oriented programs and projectsAbility to lead original projects from conception to design to executionExperience working in a clinical environment including working with children, children with severe neurological disabilities, and their familiesDemonstratable project management skillsKnowledge of University core operational systemsExperience organizing and executing applied neurotechnologies projects including leading diverse teams to execute at all stagesAbility to recognize diverse research funding opportunities and organize successful grant submissionsDemonstrated leadership ability within diverse research networks from institutional to international levelsSignificant experience in advanced digital/analog signal processingSignificant experience with developing and/or applying machine learning algorithmsExperience in developing applications for BCI, e.g. using Unity (or other) game enginesFamiliarity with the translation of projects from research to clinical care and familiarity with hospital environments and health care systemsFamiliarity with the translation of projects from research and clinical care to commercialization including familiarity with related technologies companies and the ability to connect with industry partnersComfort and ability to communicate and interact with adults and children (including those with disability)Application Deadline: August 12, 2021We would like to thank all applicants in advance for submitting their resumes.
