Job Description

Vermilion has an excellent opportunity for a Royalty Specialist reporting to the Manager, Production Accounting and based in Calgary. The successful candidate will contribute to Vermilion’s continued success by delivering best in class expertise and supporting Production Accountants to ensure accuracy of monthly payments to all Canadian freehold and royalty owners. Additional responsibilities include: liaising with royalty owners/business stakeholders, annual tax filing of the T5 & NR4’s, Alberta Freehold Mineral tax and analyzing/recording royalty income.Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the Canadian assets monthly freehold and overriding payments associated with approximately 1300 royalty owners and associated inquiries
  • Prepare and present monthly royalty payment analysis to management including 12 month royalty rate trending analysis, summary of prior period adjustments and royalty owner change impacts
  • Prepare, analyze and submit monthly account reconciliations
  • Provide expertise and guidance to Production Accountants pertaining to royalty contract interpretation associated with master file set-up in Metrix
  • Single point of contact for royalty changes from Land and the supporting back-up for tracking issues for audit compliance
  • Record, analyze and identify misses or discrepancies in Vermilion’s royalty income payments
  • Participate in the development of new business processes to aid in recovering potential missed royalty income
  • Record and analyze Alberta Freehold Mineral tax payments and complete associated rebills
  • Prepare the annual T5 and NR4 filings
  • Participation in key royalty project initiatives such as review of royalty deductions, unit agreements, and focus on continual improvement to the Land to PA data exchange
  • Participate and support initiatives to improve efficiency, including increasing use of new technologies, process, standardization, etc.
  • Review, address and assist in timely resolution for freehold and overriding royalty audit queries
  • Assess and complete ad hoc requests / queries as required
  • Other duties and special projects as required
Essential Experience & Skills
  • Minimum 5 years of oil and gas production accounting experience
  • Knowledge of the Qbyte accounting system, CS Explorer and Metrix production accounting system would be considered an asset
  • Solid understanding of how to interpret royalty mineral agreements
  • Very strong Microsoft Excel skills (filters, pivot tables, lookups etc.) with prior experience leveraging these skills to improve processes and efficiencies
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to support strong working relationships with key stakeholders
  • Solid analytical and problem-solving skills
Education
  • CAPPA certification preferred
  • Post-Secondary education in Accounting or Business would be considered an asset
