We have maintained our Platinum membership status since 2008.POSITION SUMMARYReporting to the Safety Manager, the Safety Advisor is an integral member of the Safety Department, by providing safety training to our employees, assisting in investigations, being an ambassador for safe work procedures and educating CANA employees on safe work practices. The Safety Advisor demonstrates safety leadership by advising on all HSE activities on CANA’s worksites including safety reporting, risk assessments and auditing.KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/RESPONSIBILITIESAssist with the ongoing development, implementation, evaluation and auditing of the Safety Management Program’s standards, policies, procedures and rules;Monitor compliance to regulatory, legislative, project and client requirements and initiate corrective actions when required;Maintain up-to-date knowledge of and OH&S legislation and codes of practice;Interface with site management team, subcontractors, client HSE personnel and other project stakeholders on HSE;Provide continued support to work sites by encouraging and educating employees to take precautions and adhere to safety rules, policies and procedures;Conduct regular site HSE audits to ensure consistent application of HSE procedures and practices. Provide assessments with recommendations as necessary;Training of personnel on HSE regulations, responsibilities and assessments;Assist with management of all data associated with incident reporting and field audits through identifying emerging trends or risks;Assist with administration of HSE record keeping, reporting systems and employee training;Assist in investigation of all injuries, accidents, incidents and near misses. Identify root causes and provide recommendations for corrective actions;Ensure follow-up corrective actions are tracked appropriately for all findings resulting from self-directed audits and findings stemming from incident and near miss investigations;Assist with maintaining COR certifications;Support in maintaining ISNetworld, Avetta and other HSE data base requirements;Development of site-specific Safety Management Plans, Emergency Response Plans, Subcontractor Orientations and Prime Contractor requirements;Assist injured workers in establishing modified duties and administer the return to work policy;Management of site specific WHMIS requirements (i.e. SDS data);Administer the WHMIS training program;Monitor the safety performance of all on-site workers.Identify and review various health and safety concerns specific to the work site and ensure construction site activities do not put members of the public at risk;Ensure daily risk assessments are being conducted as per CANA policy;Update and display safety policies and pertinent information on bulletin boards when applicable;Advise on appropriate protective equipment and on the cost of implementing changes.REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILTIESTo be successful in the role applicants will have:Strong interpersonal skills.Strong public speaking skills.Strong organizational and time-management skills.Attention to detail and accuracy of information.Tact and diplomacy.Good conflict resolution skills.Ability to handle confidential information with a high degree of professionalism.Proficiency with computer systems and applications including the Microsoft Office Suite.Strong ability to produce well written and consistent documentation.QUALIFICATIONSNCSO certified.ACSA Peer Auditor Certification.5+ years’ experience in a Health, Safety and Environmental role preferably in the commercial construction or utilities industries.Willing to obtain Advanced First Aid including CPR.Class 5 license with clean driver’s abstract.WORKING CONDITIONSAlthough an office position, the nature of this role requires frequent visits to project sites for training and inspections. “On-Call” work is required to respond to incidents as they occur.
