This team is dedicated to providing “cradle to cradle” (planning, engineering, environmental science, construction, and operations) solid waste solutions to waste management clients. In addition to our National Solid Waste Practice, Tetra Tech coordinates a Global Solid Waste Practice that our Canadian team regularly interacts allowing access to other experts with experience in developing solid waste strategies. Tetra Tech annually ranks as one of the top consulting firms in the Solid Waste field according to the Engineering News Record.The Canadian Tetra Tech solid waste team is involved in a wide range of earth science related activities around waste management facilities. Our team of engineers and geoscientists come from a range of backgrounds, and specialize in greenfield facility siting, regulatory approvals, environmental investigations, conceptual site model development, environmental risk management, monitoring programs/compliance, and site closure and remediation. Our projects and sites are diverse, and we are looking for an individual with similar diversity who thrives in a multidisciplinary team environment. The position is best suited to a professional engineer/geoscientist with pragmatic problem-solving skills, comfortable working in multiple jurisdictions, and with a strong technical background in both regulatory and earth science related fields (air, landfill gas, soil vapour, hydrogeology, geochemistry (leachate and ground water), surface water, emissions measurement…etc.)We specialize in world class engineering and geoscience support for siting, operations, management, closure, and monitoring for specialized waste management facilities including:

  • Engineered Landfills (Hazardous, Construction and Demolition, Industrial, Oil and Gas and Municipal Solid Waste).
  • Non-engineered landfills/dumps.
  • Organics Facilities (such as Compost Facilities as Anaerobic Digestion Facilities).
  • Transfer Stations (for large and small communities).
  • Material Recovery Facilities.
  • Waste to Energy Facilities.
  • Oilfield Liquids Processing Facilities.
We specialize in linking our understanding of how these facilities are designed, built, and operated to our understanding of they interact with the environment in which they are situated. We are seeking a Senior Engineering/Geoscience Professional to join a dynamic, multi-disciplinary waste management practice. This position offers an interesting variety of work on a diversified range of waste management projects across Canada and is based in Calgary or Edmonton.Responsibilities:
  • Compiling and evaluating complex geospatial data (physical and chemical) as it relates to waste facility sites.
  • Development of conceptual site models to aid in site and issue evaluation.
  • Oversee/manage site investigation programs involving leachate, groundwater, and LFG.
  • Preparing and assisting with regulatory approvals for waste facility infrastructure, including for new infrastructure, expansions, amendments, and renewals.
  • Evaluating and implementing risk-based solutions to environmental issues at waste facilities including risk management planning, remediation, and site closures.
  • Monitoring and compliance of waste management facilities.
  • Providing senior review and professional authentication of memos, reports, and other professional documents.
  • Planning projects, developing accurate scopes of work, cost estimates, project plans, schedules, and deliverables to execute high quality projects on time and on budget.
  • Mentoring and coaching project teams including field and technical staff and supporting a culture of quality in our project delivery.
  • Developing and maintaining key stakeholder relationships with Clients (engineers, scientists, contractors), internal technical resources and support staff (Safety, Administrative, IT, Accounting, HR, Recruitment, and Corporate Identity).
  • Participating in business development activities for the Waste Management Sector.
  • Developing and communicating project-specific health and safety documents, conducting safety inspections in the field, monitoring health and safety related items and ensuring a safe and compliant work site.
  • Conduct site inspections and oversee field work as required.
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelors degree in Science or Engineering is the minimum requirement with 10 to 15 years of progressive project execution and managment experience; however a Masters degree with a relevance to waste management is preferred.
  • The position is best suited to an individual with strong experience and interest in waste facilities and management with environmental expertise related to leachate, groundwater, landfill gas, soil vapour, and geochemistry.
  • Project management experience on medium and large projects (engineering fees in excess of $500,000). PMP designation is an asset.
  • P.Eng., or P.Geo., designation and membership with at least one Canadian Engineering/Geoscientist Association, including ability to sign off as Qualified Professional in selected jurisdictions.
  • Strong experience in site investigation including drilling investigations (using differing technologies and approaches), geological classification, geotechnical evaluation, monitoring well installations, hydraulic evaluation (e.g., slug tests, infiltration/permeameter testing), sampling techniques (groundwater, surface water, vapour) using ASTM or other related methods/standards. Construction and/or remediation experience would be an asset.
  • Strong experience in geochemical evaluation of complex data sets, and ability to ‘tease out’ the most critical information from these data.
  • Capability/understanding of supporting technical software applications (e.g., Surfer, HELP, Modflow, Aquifertest gas generation, surface water modelling, etc). Database expertise and statistical software evaluation would be an asset.
  • You have an ability to think spatially, evaluating sites in the context of a conceptual site model, integrating related data sets (e.g., waste, leachate, landfill gas, soils and groundwater) to support conclusions, and implementing pragmatic solutions to support risk management/remediation where necessary.
  • You place a high value on quality, in terms of data collection, synthesis, evaluation and development of conclusions and recommendations. You value both in your own work, and in how you train and mentor other staff.
  • Excellent technical, writing, communication skills, and the ability to work well as a leader are essential to this position.
  • Previous experience in geoenvironmental consulting and knowledge of current industry related codes of practice, guidelines and regulations (both provincial and federal) is preferred.
  • Effective and professional oral and written communication skills are critical as interaction with staff, clients, subcontractors, and government agencies will be required.
  • Valid (Provincial) Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent).
  • You will also possess exceptional time management skills, be flexible, effective at multi-tasking, and adapt well to change.
  • You are a team player with a demonstrated ability to work well with junior, intermediate, and senior engineers, scientists, technical, and administrative staff.
  • You have a strong regard for safety and demonstrate exemplary safety leadership. Completion of safety training courses are considered an asset.
  • Training and/or certification through a recognized solid waste association (e.g., Solid Waste Association of North America, Compost Council of Canada) is considered an asset.
