Job Description

Project/Program Overview:Our Calgary team is developing a key software product as part of this offering that provides the operating system and middleware to enable tactical voice and data communications, sensor and device integration, and common application services.The project includes all phases including system design, software and hardware design, system integration, and system validation. The project will be a multi-site development with activities spanning several product development groups in Calgary and across the General Dynamics Mission Systems International business area.The software product team will consist of several software development teams, each focusing on a specific set of software components and services in the areas of communication, device integration, and common services for multiple third-party software applications. Software development teams will follow the Scrum framework for software development. The Scrum teams operate within a larger Scaled Agile Framework organization. The successful candidate will be a Product Owner for one of the Scrum teams.This role will be a combination of working remotely and onsite at our Calgary office. We have a number of measures in place for onsite working – our top priority remains the health and safety of our colleagues.The Technical Product Owner & Team Lead is a content management leader who prioritizes and grooms the Product Backlog and ensures that the team understands what they are working on. The Technical Product Owner/Team Lead is also responsible for overall guidance, direction and leadership provided to the team. The Technical Product Owner/Team Lead’s responsibilities include:Technical Leadership:

  • Preparation and participation in PI and sprint planning
  • Management and development of the team backlog ensuring that the Scrum Team delivers to program priorities and cadence, whilst ensuring this fits in with delivery of the whole scope within programme timeframes.
  • Planning and Execution of the Agile iterations.
  • Understand and assist with the development of enabler work.
  • Ensure continuous release of quality software, and ensuring dependencies are understood between stakeholders.
  • Assist with continuous improvement practises.
  • Liaise with the Product Manager, RTE and the Business Owner.
  • Provide line management and QCIs for Scrum Team.
Reporting:
  • Report progress and issues regularly through planned ceremonies, and provide updates on issues to the Business Owner, Product Manager & RTE
  • Working with the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) Product Manager and other stakeholders to understand their needs
  • Having a vision and roadmap for the Product within their area of responsibility
  • Clearly expressing this vision in understandable Product Backlog items
  • Ordering and prioritizing the items in the Product Backlog to best achieve goals and missions
  • Optimizing the value of the work the Development Team performs
  • Ensuring that the Product Backlog is visible, transparent, and clear to all, and shows what the Scrum team will work on next
  • Ensuring the Development Team understands items in the Product Backlog to the level needed
  • The Product Owner is the sole person responsible for managing the Product Backlog
Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, System Engineering or equivalent discipline is required.
  • Minimum of four years experience in software engineering
  • Disciplined approach to software engineering with knowledge of agile development methods
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Strong problem solving and analysis skills
Ideally you will also have some experience in some or all of the following;
  • Previous experience as a Product Owner or Scrum Master on an Agile team
  • Professional Scrum Product Owner (PSPO) or Professional Scrum Master (PSM) certification
  • Previous experience leading teams in an agile environment
  • Previous experience, certification, or knowledge of the Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe 4.0)
Must be able to obtain and maintain Canadian Security Clearance and a positive Controlled Goods Assessment.
