Job Description

Position OverviewThe Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) - Rockies in the Haskayne School of Business invites applications for two Venture Analysts. These Full-time Fixed Term positions is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.The Creative Destruction Lab-Rockies (CDL-Rockies) is a cohort-based university-linked new venture accelerator program at the Haskayne School of Business. CDL-Rockies helps innovators transition from science projects to high-growth companies, inviting some of the world’s top, early-stage technology ventures to Calgary for this innovative 9-month program. After a rigorous application and selection process, the CDL-Rockies program engages senior entrepreneurial leaders, as well as noted scientists, economists, investors and graduate students in the support of new venture founders with a goal to prepare these founders for seed stage financing and accelerated growth.CDL-Rockies is built upon the original CDL model, developed at the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. The CDL network has to date created over $6 billion in equity value for participating ventures in a seven-year period of time, while educating thousands of students and creating new and unique job opportunities for graduates and the broader ecosystem.The achievement of these milestones (well beyond the original 5-year goal) is testament to the CDL culture, which we work to emulate at CDL-Rockies. The CDL culture is one that engages a team of brilliant people with significant relationship acumen, a strong sales orientation, an innovative mindset, and relentless ambition to create the foundation for world-class venture acceleration.Globally, the CDL network includes sites located in the business and management schools in the Universities of British Columbia, Calgary, Oxford, Wisconsin-Madison, and Toronto; Dalhousie University; HEC Montreal and Paris; and the Georgia Institute of Technology.CDL Rockies currently supports three cohorts of 25 ventures annually in each of prime science (Prime), agriculture (Ag), and energy transition (Energy).This position normally works Monday to Friday, 8:30 A.M. to 4:30 P.M, 7 hours per day (35 hours per week), although extended or alternative hours (evenings and weekends) and travel will be required based on the needs of CDL-Rockies. This position is required to maintain complete confidentiality regarding all business matters and to exercise a high degree of professionalism in the execution of his/her duties.Primary Purpose of the Position:Reporting the Stream Manger (Prime), this position will be responsible for venture nurture and recruitment, supporting high-priority initiatives, expanding projects that CDL Rockies is trialing on behalf of the CDL network with a view to network-wide adoption, and developing the portfolio of prime sciences companies.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):Analysis/Program Development:Contribute to the overall CDL-Rockies program strategy, including tracking KPIs for reporting and the strategy review process, and identify efficiency opportunities within the programSpecific to the Nurture Program:Conduct market research to support the Nurture Program.Identify and create initiatives to support lead generation.Contribute to the creation of a system to track and assess ventures for the nurture list.Prepare campaigns including writing content to support multiple marketing campaigns.Specific to the Alumni Program:Contribute to the CDL-Rockies Alumni Strategy.Implement activities related to alumni with the "test" mindset.Evaluate and continue to test value proposition for alumni.Venture Management:Manages up to four early stage technology start-up companies over the course of a year.Identifies out of market recruitment opportunities including potential community "gatekeepers" and triage applicants into high, medium, and low categoriesResponsible for supporting assigned ventures, navigate the various steps and requirements necessary to be successful in the program and responsible for revolving issues and providing advice to meet established goalsWrites and maintains the venture briefing documents for each companyRegular progress reporting to the Fellows and Associates on the venture progress against established goals, with the goal of maximizing the possibility of investmentProvides support and oversight to the MBA students assigned to their ventures as those students work to help ventures accomplish pre-established goalsQualifications / Requirements:Graduate degree that combines business, administration, science and innovation, such as Master of Biomedical Technology, is requiredFive years of relevant work experience such as conducting scientific research, market assessment, preparing campaigns, assisting in managing/work supporting early start up companies, project management and/or operationsSpecific knowledge of and experience with the CDL venture management process, either through completion of the CDL-specific MBA course, participation in a CDL-specific internship/coop program, or employment at a CDL-affiliated school (including the Universities of British Columbia, Calgary, Oxford, Toronto, or Wisconsin-Madison; HEC Montreal or Paris; Georgia Tech; or Dalhousie) is requiredExcellent verbal and written communication skills are requiredDemonstrated ability to manage multiple projects or priorities simultaneously; strong organization and problem-solving skills are requiredAbility to handle ambiguity and work effectively in a complex and changing organization is requiredStrong interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and as part of a team are requiredExperience in sales is an assetExperience working with start-ups, technology companies, or venture capital firms is an assetApplication Deadline: August 12, 2021We would like to thank all applicants in advance for submitting their resumes.
