Job Description

Position OverviewThe Ward of the 21st Century in the Cumming School of Medicine invites applications for a Research Assistant. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 6 months (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.The W21C is a research and innovation initiative within the OBrien Institute for Public Health at the University of Calgary. W21Cs collaborative space and diverse team supports and enables health researchers to bring new ideas, prototypes, or health care innovations into the health care environment. One of W21Cs primary goals is to attract and support multidisciplinary researchers, clinicians, industry partners, and patients and their families to collaborate on innovative approaches to improve patient safety and quality of care using state-of-the-art health services and research infrastructure.The W21C Research Assistant reports to the Program Manager, W21C and will receive direction from the Lead Investigator(s) of the project(s) they are assigned to. The Research Assistant will be responsible for supporting project specific and general W21C activities.Position DescriptionSummary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Coordinating and carrying out research activities of key research studies in consultation with the principal investigator(s) and project research associates
  • Under limited supervision, responsible for performing a range of research and coordination tasks in support of W21C program objectives
  • Ensuring stakeholders are kept informed of the studys progression
  • Assisting with applications (e.g., ethics, grants) and development of research protocols
  • Data collection
  • Assisting with interpretation and analysis of data collected
  • Assist with report writing, production of research papers suitable for publication, and support knowledge translation activities
  • Provide general support to the Ward of the 21st Century program to facilitate the progression of the W21C vision. Activities include research center space management, support for event planning, and contributions to the overall collaborative environment
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • Bachelors degree, with a preference for training within a health related field
  • Experience working in the clinical setting, particularly conducting research with health care providers and patients is an asset
  • Experience conducting quantitative and qualitative clinical research
  • Database skills required with experience in SPSS, Excel, Access, RedCAP and other databases
  • Knowledge of the W21C Initiative is an asset
  • Leadership, communication skills, organizational skills, problem solving skills and interpersonal skills required
  • Resourceful, innovative, creative, strategic, problem solver
  • Good judgment and concern for detail and accuracy
  • Ability to receive direction, collaborate with others in setting goals, and work effectively in teams to achieve agreed upon goals
  • Ability to work independently and promote good teamwork
  • Ability to demonstrate tact and courtesy dealing with patients, staff and physicians
  • Ability to communicate well with colleagues from various disciplines and external collaborators within a complex initiative.
  • Must be able to maintain strict confidentiality of patient and study records
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Word, Access, PowerPoint and Excel)
  • Experience with statistical software packages
