We also assess the effectiveness of environmental policy, legislation and regulations, and address priority environmental information needs identified by internal and external stakeholders. The Branch consists of four sections: Watershed Sciences; Airshed Sciences; Air and Watershed Management; Community-Based Monitoring and Knowledge and Air and Watershed Monitoring.RoleThe Watershed Sciences Section of the Air and Watershed Stewardship Branch is looking for a Watershed Scientist who will be responsible for providing data and analytical support for provincial projects related to understanding the condition of Alberta’s watersheds, with a focus on water quality and quantity. The successful candidate will have expertise in the analyses of large water quality and water quantity data sets that can be used to refine and develop Alberta’s surface water monitoring program design and report on environmental condition. You will apply statistical expertise in the assessment of, but not limited to, long-term trends in water quality/quantity over time, the assessment of water quality and quantity against guidelines, objectives and other thresholds, and the calculation of constituent loads in rivers.As the successful candidate, you will support senior scientists and other Watershed Sciences staff in the delivery of watershed, regional and provincial scale evaluation and reporting projects in support of Alberta’s core surface water monitoring program. These programs ensure the Government of Alberta receives scientific, credible and relevant information needed to responsibly manage Alberta’s river systems in the face of increasing pressure from industrial development, growing population, climate change and other pressures.You will contribute to all phases of watershed monitoring and research delivered by the Watershed Sciences Section, including:

  • Design: Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of watershed research provincial monitoring programs that address major issues of concern to the Government of Alberta.
  • Plan: Support multi-year research and monitoring plans to assess the response of Alberta’s surface water resources to multiple stressors.
  • Deliver: Ensure the Division’s monitoring and research projects are delivered in a safe and effective manner.
  • Evaluate and Report: Complete scientifically credible environmental data evaluation and reporting that meet project plan commitments and legislated reporting requirements.
The person filling this position is expected to enhance the scientific expertise and capacity of the Watershed Sciences Section in relation to watershed sciences, cumulative effects assessment and synthesis of large water quality and quantity data sets. You may contribute to external research teams, which may include professors at post-secondary institutions, graduate students, federal scientists and other scientists from external science organizations through their collaborations.QualificationsRequirements:
  • Master of Science degree with 2 years related experience in a relevant scientific discipline related to watershed sciences in at least one of the following areas: limnology, aquatic biogeochemistry, hydrogeology, sediment chemistry, or inorganic and organic contaminant chemistry.
  • A demonstrated record of publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals and scientific technical reports commensurate with established peers with a similar level of experience.
Equivalencies:
  • PhD (no experience required)
  • BSc with four years of related experience.
The position requires knowledge and experience in the following areas:
  • Advanced knowledge of watershed, aquatic and ecosystem science.
  • Knowledge of current and emerging provincial and national watershed issues.
  • Knowledge of Alberta’s watersheds including key processes and stressors affecting water quality and quantity in the province.
  • Advanced knowledge of new and emerging statistical methods related to the assessment of water quality and quantity data.
  • Demonstrated experience applying appropriate statistical methods in the assessment of temporal trends in water quality and/or quantity.
  • Demonstrated experience applying appropriate statistical methods to the quantification of constituent loads in rivers and streams.
  • Demonstrated experience working with large water quality and quantity data sets. This should include experience in the review, sorting and preparation of raw data sets and the subsequent statistical analyses of that data. Experience working with AEP’s monitoring data and/or data from similar long-term monitoring programs is an asset.

  • Strong data analysis, modelling and interpretation skills, including expertise in the use of software such as R, Python, Matlab etc.
  • Strong scientific writing skills.
  • Strong project management and planning skills.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to develop and deliver understandable scientific information to key stakeholders, the scientific community, public audiences, and senior executives in government.
  • Ability to work collaboratively at the group and individual level is required.
  • Must be self-motivated and take initiative to meet project deliverable timelines.
