Chatham-Kent Public Library has an opening for a permanent part-time Library Assistant 1 at the Chatham Branch. This is a permanent part-time position of 16.0 hours per week.This position will include testing as a part of the recruitment process.Job descriptionThe Library Assistant 1 is primarily responsible for ensuring that the library collections are returned to their proper location. The position also provides assistance on the circulation desk. This position is also responsible for general clean up duties indoors and outdoors.Essential responsibilitiesDemonstrate Chatham-Kent’s core values and competenciesCirculation: place holds and renew material; register and renew patrons, edit borrower records; collect fines and other payments; check materials in and out; complete or assist patrons in completing interlibrary loan, purchase suggestion and literary angels formsProcess materials: retrieve holds; empty book drops; retrieve newspapers; prepare courier and rotation bins;Complete daily collection lists: in transit holds; missing items; lost materials; claims returned; expired holds; dusty listsCollection maintenance; assess materials based on condition as they are returned; sort and prepare materials for shelving; shelve and shelf read; repair or jacket material as directed by appropriate librarianOutreach and Programming: set up programming space; awareness of library resources and servicesReference services: provide directional assistance - direct patrons to resource material or location, provide reader's advisory assistance; answer basic reference questions referring questions that cannot be answered to reference services; assist patrons with online catalogue; assist patrons with photocopiers & printers; support and assist patrons with online databases, electronic resources/ internetEffectively use integrated library systems (ILS)Assist with patron concerns, routing unresolved issues to Librarian/ManagerAssist with marketing and promotion of resources and servicesHandle telephone inquiries in a professional and timely manner, directing patrons to appropriate staff and resources as requiredDemonstrate the Library’s mission and values through day-to-day activitiesParticipate in discussions, offer suggestions and inputParticipate on project teams as assignedContribute to creating an effective teamActively participate in Municipal and Library trainingEssential qualificationsSecondary school diploma or equivalent education (e.g. GED certificate), plus one year of post-secondary educationExcellent communication skills, both verbal and writtenExcellent customer service skillsBasic internet searching skillsProficient in the use of integrated library systems for basic circulation functionsStrong computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) (or similar software programs)Other qualificationsPrevious library experience, preferably in a public library, an assetPrevious experience working with children an assetPrevious experience in classifying documents (alphabetical, numerical, alphanumerical) an assetPrevious experience in a customer service setting an assetCertifications, memberships, licensesEXCEL (SOLS program) certificate or other library related courses an assetWork environment/hours of workThis position works both indoors and outdoorsThis position works weekday hours, with afternoon, evening and weekend hoursBackground check requirementsThe successful candidate will be required to furnish an original Police Information Search (criminal reference check) (working with vulnerable persons) prior to commencement of employment; you must be 18 years of age or older to obtain a vulnerable police check.Essential physical and/or safety requirementsPhysical stamina, flexibility, good physical health and the ability to lift 11.4 to 15.9 kgs or 25 to 30 lbs are a necessity, as is the ability to stand for extended periods of time, kneel and reachBending: frequent stooping, twisting, kneeling, crouching, squatting (4.05 to 13.64 kgs or 10 to 30 lbs) (retrieving items, shelving materials, processing materials)Walking: constant walking on level surface (movement around library.
