Job Description

HOURS:

  • This position is a CONTRACT FULL TIME position (up to 40 hours per week).
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Preparation, cook and serve of all meals; including special dietary needs of the residents as required.
  • Follows guidelines for the safety and security of food and equipment and monitors practices to ensure adherence. Participates in Occupational Health and Safety committees.
  • Manages food and supply inventory; ensures the best use of resources, including donations to minimize waste. Monitors food purchases to ensure budgetary constraints are observed. Coordinates the ordering of food supplies in collaboration with Family Service Food Service Worker, Food Recovery and Shelter manager; ensures the complete inventory supply on a weekly basis
  • Collaborates with Volunteer Coordinator for volunteer orientation and training, including termination of volunteers as may be required. Provides direct supervision to weekend cooks for the Shelter.
  • Ensure safety in compliance with Health and Safety standards.
  • Provides the Shelter Manager and Family Services Operation Administrator of any maintenance work and repair of all kitchen equipment that needs to be done.
  • Plans weekly/monthly meal menu for all Shelter clients and Staff. Meals include: Breakfast for up to 60 Shelter residents; Supper for Shelter residents including Staff; morning, afternoon, and evening snacks for Shelter residents; weekend Lunch meal for Shelter, or anytime Soup Kitchen is closed for the noon meal.
  • Coordinate with Dietician annually, or as required, to ensure nutritional value of meals related to effective menu planning. Ensures the preparation of documents and record keeping in compliance with BC Health Inspectors, and The Salvation Army Accreditation Standards.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:Education, Training and Experience including lifeskills:
  • The successful job applicant will have completed Grade 12, or equivalent
  • Food Safe Level 1, (Food Safe Level 2 an asset)
  • Standard First Aid Certificate
  • Professional Cooking Certificate or graduation from a recognized 12 month program in cooking
  • 2-5 years of recent related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • One year previous experience in supervision and budgeting
Required Skills/Physical Effort/Financial Resources/Dexterity Required:The performance of the job requires a frequent amount of standing, squatting, bending, carrying, pushing, and walking; moderate to considerable amounts of lifting. The performance of the job requires frequent attention to proper maintenance and cleanliness of the facility. Adhering to safety procedures and regulations and keeping track of proper cleaning supplies.The incumbent is involved in financial matters regularly for the procurement of food supplies and equipment maintenance, and has responsibility for adherence to the approved Food Service budgets, including the wise use of all purchased or donated resources. The incumbent will have significant input into the annual budget in collaboration with the Shelter Manager and Business Manager.The performance of the job requires frequent attention to the preparation of food, reading recipes, adhering to safety procedures and regulations and coordinating ordering supplies.The incumbent is required to lift up to 20 pounds.Work Environment:The incumbent’s work environment is typically located at the Shelter Buildings, Smoke Pit, Laundry Room, Care & Share Centre Kitchen, Food Recovery Program and Parking Lots.The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions:

  • Possible cuts and/or burns related to food preparation, and entering freezers

  • Vaccination Against Tuberculosis
