Work ArrangementsThis regular, part-time (17.5 hours per week) 8-months repeating term leave position is available starting August 29, 2022. Regular hours of work are to be determined based on operational needs between 7:00 am – 5:00 pm from Monday to Friday. This position does not have hours during the summer semester. Shift days and times may change depending on the Department’s need. Hours may be increased on a per semester basis. Occasional evening and/or weekend work may be required. Provides exceptional client-centred service on a consistent basis to all stakeholder groups.Responsibilities1. Provides laboratory instruction and demonstration related to VTEC courses, subject to the curricula approval of VTEC faculty.a. instructs students with respect to the laboratory component of Veterinary Technology courses and assists students with difficulties related to the lecture component of courses;b. demonstrates the correct use of equipment in the laboratory;c. instructs students with respect to safety procedures;d. supervises students in the laboratory, ensuring compliance with safety procedures and VTEC Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs);e. supports students in practice of essential skills during and outside of regularly scheduled laboratory times;f. supports students in set up for live-animal labs prior to regularly scheduled laboratory times;g. develops and implements strategies to facilitate student learning.2. Evaluates student work and performance in relation to laboratory requirements.a. evaluates written work submitted by studentsb. evaluates and provides verbal and written feedback on the performance of students in the lab in relation to essential skill requirements of courses;c. assesses and assigns final laboratory grades in conjunction with VTEC faculty;d. provides additional assistance to students, outside of regularly scheduled laboratory times, in relation to course work;e. invigilates and marks mid-term and final lab exams, and may assist faculty with invigilation of final exams when required;f. sets and assesses lab questionnaires, subject to the approval of the Dean;g. formulates staff schedule and lab exam schedules, subject to the approval of the Dean.3. Prepares materials for use in the laboratory, subject to the curricula approval of the VTEC faculty, including using multimedia computer applications.a. gathers, prepares and sets out materials, supplies and equipment for each labb. actively seeks and assesses new information and determines its relative value in relation to facilitating student learning in the laboratory;c. sets up and maintains simulation models according to manufacturers’ recommendations;d. obtains and prepares companion animal cadavers for use in lab; arranges for post-lab cremation pick up;e. sets and evaluates laboratory quizzes and exams in conjunction with VTEC faculty;f. maintains and updates handouts and arranges for printing of laboratory manuals;g. creates and/or initiates the development of supplementary instructional materials such as instructional videos, posters, information sheets, etc.;h. researches, designs and writes experiments for student use;i. cares for, and ensures the safety of, companion and laboratory animals (owned and shelter-acquired) utilized in labs.4. Performs other related duties, such as:a. creates, maintains and updates report sheets;b. maintains records of VTEC laboratory grades;c. sets up laboratory equipment and demonstrations;d. ensures equipment is in good working order and performs daily, weekly and monthly maintenance according to manufacturers’ recommendations;e. participates as a discipline member in the revision of laboratory materials and manuals;f. maintains currency with respect to VTEC and VTEC laboratory instruction;g. arranges acquisition, transportation and preparation of patients (owned and shelter-acquired) for student labs;h. ensures appropriate follow-up on patient lab results and disseminates completed patient files to shelters or pet owners;i. maintains a practicum site list and facilitates relationships between students and practicum sites;j. formulates students scheduling in lab roles as well as cleaning and husbandry dutiesk. manages inventory, audits and maintains logs of Narcotics and other Controlled drugs as directed by the VTEC Lab Supervisor.To Be Successful in this Role You Will Need
