Job Description

Your Opportunity:The University of Alberta Hospital (UAH) Critical Care Program consists of the General Systems Intensive Care Unit (GSICU) and the Edmonton Firefighters #39; Burn Treatment Unit. As part of the Clinical Resource Team (CRT), you will support both General Systems ICU and the Edmonton Firefighters #39; Burn Treatment Unit. The GSICU is a Level 1 Trauma Centre ICU and provincial transplant center for northern and central Alberta, northern BC, Saskatchewan, and the northern Territories. As a Registered Nurse who is part of the interdisciplinary care team, you will provide evidence-based care to patients with critical illness or trauma, often with multisystem involvement. You will care for patients requiring continuous and intermittent renal replacement for acute and chronic failure. The successful candidate will provide patient and family-centred care to patients undergoing liver transplants as well as kidney/pancreas transplants. GSICU nurses are members of the Code Team and Medical Emergency Team (MET) for the Walter C. McKenzie campus at the UAH. The GSICU team also provides support for the Special Isolation Unit (SIU), caring for patients with complex isolation needs such as Ebola. The Burn Unit is one of two American Burn Association verified burn centres in Canada with a catchment area of central and northern Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, and the Northern Territories. As a Registered Nurse working collaboratively within the multidisciplinary Burn Team, you provide evidence-based care to patients with extensive burns and complex wounds requiring intensive care and management. Pediatric patients with burns not requiring artificial airway management are also cared for within this unit. Medical-surgical patients requiring ventilator and inotrope support may also be cared for within the Burn Unit.Description:As a Registered Nurse (RN), you will provide a wide variety of nursing services to patients, families, communities and populations, while taking necessary steps to ensure their safety and well-being. In your role, you will utilize nursing processes, through critical thinking, problem solving and decision making, as well as teach, counsel and advocate on behalf of patients and their families. You will play a leadership role in supporting an integrated and holistic approach to patient care, health promotion and maintenance. You will provide safe, quality patient and family centered care while reflecting the shared vision and values of AHS. PLEASE NOTE: Provisional Permit Holders shall be paid $35.87/hour - $43.82/hour. Upon being entered into the register of Registered Nurses, the rate of pay shall be adjusted to the rate of pay applicable to a Registered Nurse in accordance with AHS/UNA Article 25.02(b)(i) or (ii) as applicable. Required Qualifications:Completion of an accredited nursing education program. Active or eligible for registration and practice permit with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support - Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP). If you have not practiced as a Registered Nurse within the last five (5) years, completion of the following free courses is required: CRNA Medication Management - Chapters 1 - 4 (https://connect.nurses.ab.ca/home/%2Flearning-and-development%2Flearning-modules%2F) and the NextGenU Health Assessment Resources Certification (https://courses.nextgenu.org/course/view.phpid=271#section-0)Additional Required Qualifications:Recent completion of a recognized Critical Care course with 1 year of adult critical care experience is required. Candidates without previous Adult ICU experience may be considered for the AHS Critical Care Orientation Program (OPACCA), a theory training and orientation program facilitated via online classes, followed by unit buddy shifts with clinical instructor supervision. Candidate must achieve a minimum grade of 75% on theory to continue to the clinical assessment. Must demonstrate excellent assessment, documentation, clinical, communication, organization and patient care skills to complete the Clinical Assessment and to continue employment with the Critical Care Program. Alberta Health Services reserves the ability to hire individuals with less experience or education. Must display excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills, and demonstrate critical thinking skills. Leadership skills and proven mentorship skills are a must. Must be able to identify own learning needs, seek guidance in professional practice when deficits occur and demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional growth and development. A commitment to providing quality patient and family-centred care in a team environment must be demonstrated. Charge Nurse duties may be required. Must have the physical capability for the role, including the ability to lift to and including 50 pounds.Preferred Qualifications:Previous experience within an ICU setting, observation room, inpatient trauma, or experience with ventilated patients is preferred. Certifications, training or experience with the following are preferred: ACLS, TNCC, CNA Critical Care Certification, intermittent hemodialysis and/or CRRT, cardiac rhythm analysis, Pacemakers, Cardioversion/Defibrillation, Emergency Cardiac Arrest Management, External Ventricular Devices, and advanced hemodynamic monitoring.
