Job Description

The Municipality of North Cowichan invites applications from candidates with the proven skills, qualifications and abilities for two (2) student positions working in our Operations Department on a temporary basis from approximately May 1 to August 29, 2025. Tasks may include but are not limited to: road construction projects, litter collection, weed removals, vegetation control, pothole filling, assisting in ditch cleaning, culvert and storm sewer maintenance, tree trimming and removals. Preferred candidates will have experience with labour-intensive jobs, such as landscape/grounds maintenance, general construction, farm labouring, painting, and use of related equipment, power tools, and machinery. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time.This position may be of interest to Civil Engineering students wanting to gain hands-on experience in related areas.Required Skills, Qualifications and Abilities:

  1. Registered as a full-time, post-secondary student at an accredited institution during the current academic year (2024-2025) and returning to school full-time in the upcoming academic year (2025-2026). Proof of enrolment will be required and can be included as part of your application package.
  2. Good organization and communication skills.
  3. Independence of judgment and capability of working with minimal supervision.
  4. The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
  5. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 7 orquot;N quot; Driver #39;s License at minimum; a satisfactory current driver #39;s abstract will be required. This is a unionized position (CUPE Local 358) and the collective agreement may be viewed on our website. This position will receive an additional 6% pay in lieu of vacation.Candidates being considered will be required to undergo a comprehensive evaluation of skills, qualifications, and abilities.
