Job Description

The Municipality of North Cowichan invites applications from candidates with the proven skills, qualifications and abilities for three (3) student positions working in our Utilities Department on a temporary basis from approximately May 1 to August 29, 2025. If you are self-motivated, looking to take on a new challenge where you can make a difference, enjoy both responsibility and accountability, and are ready to join one of British Columbia #39;s most inclusive and environmentally conscious municipalities, we look forward to receiving your application!Students will assist in all aspects of the operation and maintenance of the Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection Systems, as well as the Water and Wastewater Treatment facilities including: facility and grounds maintenance, hydrant painting and servicing, sampling, laboratory analysis, and other related duties. Deployment to other duties may be required from time to time. The successful candidates will be working in all areas of the Utilities Department on a rotational basis. The Municipality services three unique communities comprising of three independent water supplies and distribution systems, three independent collection systems, and four wastewater treatment facilities.Required Skills, Qualifications and Abilities:

  1. Registered as a full-time, post-secondary student at an accredited institution during the current academic year (2024-2025) and returning to school full-time in the upcoming academic year (2025-2026). Proof of enrolment will be required and can be included as part of your application package.
  2. Post-secondary education in a related field (Water Quality Technology, etc.).
  3. Good organization and communication skills.
  4. Independence of judgment and capability of working with minimal supervision.
  5. The position may be physically demanding; candidate must be able to successfully perform all duties associated with the position. A medical certificate attesting to suitability for this position may be required.
  6. Possession and maintenance of a valid Class 7 orquot;N quot; Driver #39;s License at minimum; a satisfactory current driver #39;s abstract will be required. This is a unionized position (CUPE Local 358) and the collective agreement may be viewed on our website. This position will receive an additional 6% pay in lieu of vacation.Candidates being considered will be required to undergo a comprehensive evaluation of skills, qualifications, and abilities.
