Job Description

The Durham District School Board (DDSB) is responsible for public education in the rural settings of Uxbridge, Brock and Scugog Townships and the urban settings of Ajax, Whitby, Pickering and Oshawa.The Board employs 7,000 teaching and educational services staff. With 134 elementary, secondary schools, and learning centres, the Board accommodates more than 75,000 day students and thousands more who take advantage of a wide variety of continuing education and adult credit courses.The DDSB recognizes Indigenous rights are distinct. In the exercise of those rights, Indigenous staff and students shall not be subjected to actions with the aim or effect of depriving these distinct rights.The DDSB is committed to learning and working environments that centre human rights and equity and that are safe, welcoming, respectful, equitable, accessible, inclusive and free from discrimination, oppression, harassment and harm.Occasional teachers accept assignments within our board that could last one day to several days in multiple schools. Our Occasional teachers are essential to ensure learning continues in the classrooms when staff are absent.The Occasional Roster is a great way to get to know the school communities in DDSB.When applying for any teaching position with the DDSB, please include the following:

  • Ontario teaching certification and registration with the Ontario College of Teachers (enter you OCT number in your profile)
  • Resume and cover letter
  • Practice Teaching Reports or recent appraisal (if available)
  • Two (2) reference letters or names and numbers (including e-mail addresses, if possible) of at least two recent professional references (eg. Principal, Vice Principal, Associate Teachers, Faculty Advisors)
Our policy requires that a Criminal Reference Check with the Vulnerable Sector component issued within six months be presented as a condition of employment. Checks older than six months are not acceptable.Upon hire:
  • You must provide the Human Resources department with a current obtained or applied for (within six months of your start date) Criminal Background Check, including vulnerable sector screening.
