Highlights of the program include:

  • 8-month internship position with flexible start date, ideally in May 2022
  • Challenging assignments aligned with your designated discipline that are guided by a set of attainable expectations and deliverables
  • An assigned Supervisor, with team support, and timely feedback on work and project related matters
  • Interns will work on their term projects including an Environment, Safety, or Water Resource Management project at the site
  • Work assignments and projects may involve presentations and other interactions with both internal and external stakeholders
  • Participation in team building and social events with other employees.
About the RoleThe BHP Legacy Assets Internship Program was established to give students first-hand experience of working on a legacy site in a mining company alongside environmental professionals. Interns will work as part of an integrated team on several tasks and projects. The Program was built for a unique experience that offers professional development while networking with a diverse group of professionals.In this role you will have exposure to [one or more of the following]:
  • Daily operational function, water treatment, closure execution, and performance monitoring of a closed mine site in East Kemptville, Nova Scotia
  • Working with our diverse 5-person operations team of environmental professionals including an engineer, scientists, and technicians, as well as collaboratively with other areas of BHP
  • Experienced mentors with diverse backgrounds in environmental assessment, reclamation, mine planning and closure
  • Hands on operational experience with a closed mine site including environmental water sampling, in-house water sample analysis, regulatory sampling, assisting with water management treatment system equipment maintenance, assisting with health and safety inspections and reporting
  • Participation in workshops and training seminars provided by BHP and/or external stakeholders.
About the Role Cont.
  • Exposure to working around mobile equipment, chemical treatment infrastructure (hydrated lime), and remote working conditions (e.g., minimal cellular reception, possible wildlife encounters)
  • The candidate must have the ability to operate a computer including supporting software packages in Microsoft Office Suite and particularly Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • The site is not located along bus routes or within walking distance of any rental opportunities. Transportation to and from work is required
  • Valid Nova Scotia Class 5 driver’s license with no restrictions or equivalent is required
  • Occasional extended work hours may be required
  • The option to participate in the Operations staff on-call schedule if applicable
  • BHP requires all staff and contractors, including students, to be double vaccinated to work on site
About You
  • Students must be residents of Canada or on a valid study and work permit for the length of the internship
  • Students must be willing to work on site at the remote closed mine site in rural Nova Scotia
  • Students must demonstrate basic knowledge of environmental practices and adhere to the site safety regulations
  • Students must be dependable and flexible, demonstrate initiative and above all put safety first
  • Students should be willing to develop, plan, and complete a term project in one of the following topics:
    • A water balance study including flow and loading from various ditches across the tailings management area (TMA) and site;
    • Assist with, oversee, or complete a vegetation survey with an environmental consultant to look at vegetation succession across the TMA and other key areas across the site (this could include a Species at Risk survey).
    • The student may also propose a relevant project of their own choosing that aligns with closed mine sites.
About You Cont.
  • The candidate must have the ability and be willing to develop interpersonal, organizational and management skills, including the ability to analyse and interpret data, work independently, and as a team member
  • Previous experience in either mining or water resource management is considered an asset
  • Any equipment maintenance or landscaping experience is considered an asset
  • Experience using EQuIS or other statistics software is considered an asset.
Education
  • Must be currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate program as a full-time student registered in a Co-op or Internship program in the areas of:
    • Mining engineering
    • Environmental or geological sciences
    • Environmental technology; or
    • Water resource science/engineering
