Job Description

Opportunity SummaryThe key responsibilities of this position are focused on implementing and maintaining environmental and safety activities for the facility and providing support in these areas for plant management.Heres a look at some of the work youll be performing in each key area:Environmental

  • Coordinate, oversee and implement daily environmental programs, policies and procedures to ensure compliance with federal, provincial, local and site permit and regulatory requirements
  • Continuous emissions monitoring system (CEMS) reporting – in accordance with permit requirements enforceable by CEPA, responsible for compiling monthly, quarterly, semi-annual and annual reports. This involves monitoring, recordkeeping, interpreting data and submitting reports on time.
  • Storm water runoff plan – ensure facility meets regulatory requirements at all times. Take samples of storm water drain systems during rains, conduct analysis of samples to ensure no chemical or oil makes its way into drains.
  • Spill prevention, Control and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plan – maintain facility procedure to address the following:
    • Operating procedures to prevent substance spills onto the ground (oil, chemicals)
    • Control measures to prevent a spill from reaching navigable waters
    • Countermeasures to contain, clean up, and mitigate the effects of an oil spill
    • Discharge prevention measures including procedures for routine handling of products
  • Submit recommendations to the facility Owner on matters regarding Wastewater and water sampling procedures in accordance with compliance requirements. Provide support to the Owner for interface with local environmental regulators to include preparing for and coordinating inspections, responding to information requests, supporting strategies for and negotiations of permit modifications and renewals, and preparing routing compliance reports and communications.
  • Maintain various facets of the Company’s Environmental Management System (EMS) including but not limited to the EHS filing system, the Obligations Tracking System (OTS) and X Files (OHS & regulatory-mandated training records)
Safety
  • Coordinate, oversee, and implement safety programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with federal OHS and other regulatory requirements
  • Take ownership of the facility’s annual Safety Improvement Plan, including leading its development and managing deliverables
  • Act as a primary advocate for a safe working environment and safe work culture among the plant staff and contractors
  • Manage a comprehensive safety training program to ensure all required and recommended training is being completed in a timely manner by all affected staff
Working RelationshipsThe EH&S Manager reports to the Plant Manager and maintains a close working relationship with NAES corporate Safety and Environmental Support Services groups as well as Client corporate contacts.Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
  • Power plant environment. Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing and lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.
  • Position will require extended working hours and varied shifts at times with the possibility of weekend and holiday work as required by schedules, workload and plant conditions.
Job Qualifications
  • Associate degree or equivalent technical training knowledge and experience desired
  • Experience in safety and environmental compliance for operating facilities is desired. This experience will preferably come from a power plant or power-related industry in order to understand plant operations so that opportunities to reduce both environmental and safety risks and costs can be aggressively sought and proposed.
  • A general knowledge of power plant operations is desired, including the interrelationship of environmental impacts and compliance with operation and maintenance functions
  • General knowledge of major environmental legislation involving air, water, hazardous materials and waste management with at least one specialized area of knowledge at the regulatory requirement level
  • Experience using continuous emissions monitoring (CEMS) software desired
  • Excellent writing and analytical skills and an ability to present facts, conclusions and recommendations in written communications, both in formal and informal formats
  • Strong oral communication skills are essential. Key point-of-contact for meeting with regulators during compliance visits. Must be able to deliver training material in an instructive manner.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a record of building consensus among internal and external parties
  • Ability to perform and manage multiple varied tasks in an industrial environment and to identify and analyze potentially complex compliance risks promptly
