Job Description

At SMS Equipment, our Mechanical Supervisor plays a key role in providing organization, direction and supervision to our Mechanical Services function of branch operations. This role oversees a shop that maintains and repairs the largest, most advanced earthmoving equipment. We are looking for a candidate who will bring their leadership, technical knowledge and customer service to the team.Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Coordinates mechanical services function within the branch operations. Implements mechanical services ‘best practices’. Drives continuous improvement centred on workflow management, streamlining and or implementing new processes and procedures as well as implementing cost reductions. Monitor all mechanical measures, resource consumption, work product and work schedules to ensure overall plan execution, resource consumptions, timelines, and deadlines are consistently attained or improved upon. Assures a quality product by conducting in-process inspections and evaluating the finished product.
  • Supervisor responsibilities. Ensures that operational requirements are met by supervising, coordinating and scheduling the activities of tradespeople who repair and maintain mining equipment. Take corrective action to improve job results by providing ongoing feedback to employees.
  • Safety Compliance. Ensures department activities are conducted in full compliance with safety, health and environmental standards. Bring awareness to safety by participating fully in all Branch and Company safety programs. Maintain a safe and clean working environment by developing and enforcing procedures, rules, regulations and controls in job execution.
Qualifications:The ideal candidate will be a Heavy Equipment Technician, Journeyperson or relevant education with a minimum of 3 to 5 years’ experience as a qualified tradesman and Supervisory experience. A combination of education and experience will be considered. Additional qualifications include,
  • Position required a thorough knowledge of maintenance and repair of mining equipment.
  • Must be a strong leader with the ability to effectively lead.
  • Strong ability to plan, develop, coordinate, and direct detailed phases of mechanical functions including the performance of the same.
  • Conduct independent evaluation, selection, adaptation, and modification of mechanical services “best practice”.
  • Strong knowledge of Mine’s Act, OH&S acts and regulations and equipment inspection requirements; and Supervisor’s Certificate and First Aid would be an asset.
