Job Description

Position Title: Parks ManagerReports To: City ManagerBusiness Division: Leisure ServicesSummary: The successful applicant will manage, supervise and co-ordinate the maintenance and care of parks, boulevards, green spaces, cemetery, athletic fields and urban forest, along with the following duties:DUTIES:

  • Manages and supervises the operation and maintenance of Parks, Boulevard including Tree Management & Maintenance, other green spaces, Cemetery, Urban Forest, Athletic Fields, Ball Parks, Skate Park/Tennis Court, Mowing of City Property, Weed Control on City Property, Mosquito Control, Maintenance Management of Recreation and Parks Equipment and Outdoor Rinks
  • Develops standards and specifications of care and maintenance
  • Develops and maintains safety programs in accordance with Occupation Health & Safety regulations
  • Maintain tree inventory for the City and manage Dutch Elm Disease Program.
  • Manage and monitor mosquito and weed control programs for the City
  • Ensures optimal crew size, proper machinery and equipment assigned and materials available for repairs, maintenance and capital work
  • Participates in the appointment, hiring, suspension, dismissal, appraisals, promotions, demotions, transfer or dismissal of staff
  • Completes employee schedules and approves time sheets
  • Provides recommendations and input into purchasing goods and services.
  • Instructs or trains employees in maintenance, repairs, construction, safety and operation of equipment and tools
  • Investigates and responds to complaints
  • Ensures the recording of labour, equipment, materials and other pertinent data
  • Monitors and controls expenditures. Develops budgets, external contracts and specifications, tender documents and agreements
  • Develops policies and procedures
  • Researches, prepares and submits reports on any matter
  • Ensures the maintenance of tools and equipment
  • Receives after hour calls and arranges for corrective action
  • Promote and maintain positive public relations between staff and customers
  • Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND TRAINING
  • Grade 12
  • Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
  • Post-secondary training in Horticulture, Landscaping, Parks Maintenance or Urban Forestry
  • Tree Pruning Certificate
  • Pesticide Applicator Landscape or Mosquito and Biting Fly License
  • Formal Supervisory Training
  • OH&S Training
EXPERIENCE AND ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Five (5) years including three (3) years of supervisory experience
  • Previous experience in parks maintenance, landscaping or closely related field
  • Previous experience in irrigation system maintenance
  • Knowledge of computers and software programs
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, supervisory skills, written and oral communication
  • Strong customer service orientation
  • Formal supervisory training
