Job Description

Position SummaryThe Safety Specialist I is responsible for the implementation of mine site safety processes and implements corporate safety initiatives and conduct associated safety training. The Safety Specialist ensures that mine operations are in overall compliance with Provincial, local and site statutes and corporate standards by educating mine employees on health and safety issues and reviewing mine processes. In addition, the Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring that Safety Department actions are based on sound business, safety, and environmental goals.Supervisor ResponsibilitiesThis position does not have supervisory responsibilities over other employees.Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Promote and support the overall health, safety and work environment by implementing and assisting in the enforcement of the requirements of Coal Health and Safety Programs.
  • Contribute to the overall health, safety, and work environment of the Safety Department.
  • Implement and educate mine employees on the current requirements of any corporate safety programs.
  • Ensure health and safety work is carried out in compliance with health and safety regulations and licenses.
  • Manage all aspects of the site training requirements. (Equipment training material development, Employee equipment training evaluations, conducting fit testing, arranging training instructors, scheduling all training required within the mine, Tracking operator equipment time, Tracking apprenticeship hours, Scheduling safety equipment inspections, acting as the company lead on the training committee)
  • Must be able to work within a team setting.
  • Demonstrate and support the Westmoreland Mining Code of Conduct, promote and support overall health, safety and work environment.
  • Perform related work as required.
Typical Physical DemandsRequires mobility sufficient to travel. Requires mobility sufficient to climb on and off heavy equipment and associated mining machines. Requires mobility sufficient to navigate over uneven terrain while accessing equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate reports. Requires mobility sufficient to travel. Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires some data input for extended periods of time without leaving the work area. Occasionally lifting of safety materials, files or paper potentially weighing in excess of 50 pounds. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator, and other office equipment.Typical Working ConditionsNormal office environment. Will require outside field work related to training evaluations and safety inspections. Occasional evening or weekend work.Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum 3 years of operational experience with coal mining heavy equipment or related work experience.
  • Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities.
Licenses, Registration, and Certifications
  • Ability to eventually obtain Provincial Mine Supervisor certificate.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation would be an asset.
