The Teacher is the subject matter expert and takes the lead in ensuring effective instructional programs for our students at Prophet River Dene Tsaa School.Primary/Core ResponsibilitiesDemonstrate respect for Prophet River First Nation language and culture protocolsExpress a genuine interest in learning about the Nation’s language and culture to enhance students’ learning in the classroom.Teach students based on the British Columbia Ministry of Education curriculum guidelinesPrepare overviews, plan, and deliver lessons for all subject areasProvide classroom supervision and managementProvide individualized instruction and intervention in literacy and numeracyModify and adapt programs to account for a diversity of learning needsImplement testing and report data as requiredAssess and record students’ progress by developing report cards and individual education plansIdentify goals for students in individual education plansEstablish and build relationships with the students’ families and the Prophet River First Nation at largeCommunicate regularly with families about students’ progressMaintain a tidy and orderly classroomUse classroom management strategies to promote a healthy, safe, and orderly classroom environmentPlan and execute educational in-class and outdoor activities and eventsSupervise students during school hours and at in school events hosted in the communityObserve and understand students’ behavior and report suspicions of neglect, abuse etc.Develop and enrich professional skills and knowledge by attending seminars, conferences, and workshopsParticipate in regular staff meetings to support the smooth running and administration of the schoolSupport the leadership team to implement Prophet River First Nation’s vision and goals for their students.Be willing to participate in regular coaching and training to better own skills as an effective educatorLearns and performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with Prophet River First Nation policies, standards, practices, and procedures, as directed by the Director of Education.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to use and keep up-to-date with various technologies for teaching purposes (e.g. smartboard, iPad, learning applications, etc.)

  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and get along well with others

Health and SafetyFollows guidelines relating to health and safety and reportable incidentsMonitors the safety of the children including supervision duties at playtime, gym, lunch, and recessMonitors the environment daily for potential hazards, takes preventative action as required, and reports all concerns to the Director of Education.Other RequirementsAll employees are expected to respect the confidentiality of all information pertaining to PRFN and not disclose it to anyone who does not have a legitimate/official need for it. Please note that your obligations of confidentiality will continue indefinitely, including after separation of employment.QualificationsTraining, Education, and ExperienceMinimum Bachelor of Education DegreeValid B.C. Teaching Certificate and membership in the BC Teacher’s Federation.Experience working with an Indigenous community is beneficial.Experience working with individuals with special needs and/or vulnerable students is beneficial.Willing to complete CPR and First Aid Certificate if CPR and First Aid Certificate is not up to dateSatisfactory Criminal Record Check (vulnerable sector).Current B.C.
