Job Description

Position DescriptionA temporary full time (1.0) Learning Assistant Teacher is required by School District No. 60 (Peace River North) effective January 3, 2023 to June 30, 2023. The assignment will be at Bert Bowes Middle School.Bert Bowes Middle School is a Gr. 7-9 school in the City of Fort St John. The school enrolls a population of 500 students. We enjoy itinerant access to a range of services such as a learning resource disability teacher, teacher for visually impaired, school psychologist, ESL specialist teacher and teacher for deaf/hard of hearing. Some themes that characterize our school are a commitment to student centered learning, and a focus on collaborative planning. We have an active Parent Advisory Committee and a supportive parent community. See bowes.prn.bc.ca for more information. Qualifications and Experience

  • Valid BC Ministry of Education Teaching Certificate (or eligible for)
  • Experience with adapting and modifying curriculum to meet the needs of students
  • Masters in Special Education or working towards
  • Qualifications and demonstrated ability to teach the identified subjects at the middle years level
  • Ability/experience to carry out a variety of assessments, including classroom observation, administration and interpretation of norm-reference assessment instruments, curriculum-based assessments, diagnostic teaching methods
  • Ability to develop and implement extensive Individual Education Programs (IEP’s) (detailing adaptations and modifications) in consultation with classroom teachers, parents, students and district resource personnel
  • Ability to work with other staff and assist and/or train them to deal effectively with students who have academic challenges
  • Proven ability to proactively work with and having knowledge of strategies appropriate in supporting students classified with autistic spectrum disorders, ODD, ADHA, FAS and behavior disorders
  • Wide range of teaching and management strategies that maintain student dignity
  • Advocacy for and empathy with students with special needs
  • Ability to work with students experiencing learning and/or behavioural difficulties and students having social and emotional needs
  • Assessment practices supportive of the learning process
  • Knowledge of the literacy/numeracy curriculum and differentiated instruction
  • Commitment to pursue professional development in inclusive education
  • Knowledge of and experience implementing Positive Behaviour Interventions and Supports
  • Knowledge of methods for evaluating and selecting instructional materials suitable for students with a variety of special needs
  • Ability/expertise to work with students either individually or in small groups
  • An ability to work collaboratively and able to relate well with students, parents and other staff
  • A willingness to work on teacher teams to collaborate regarding curriculum, assessment, instruction and planning
  • A willingness and desire to be a teacher advisor
  • Advanced training in educational psychology, counseling, and or special education
  • Ability/experience to contact and liaise with outside agencies, excellent interpersonal, organizational and conflict resolution skills
  • Experience and knowledge with Middle School Philosophy and Practice including teacher advisory group, Social/Emotional Learning, Mind Up, Cognitive Coaching, Restorative Justice, and Circle Talks

Compensation
  • $2000 relocation allowance for teachers from BC, AB and Yukon and up to $4000 for teachers from other areas
  • $2,674 recruitment allowance (paid over 10 months of the school year, based on the FTE)
  • Salary as per collective agreement. Current salary grid is $54,410 - $97,815
  • Benefits as per collective agreement with option to enroll in medical, dental, extended health, and group life insurance. Benefits are employer paid based on FTE
